I was saddened to hear of the passing of Fr. McCarthy. As my local priest when I was an altar boy in St Brigid's Parish, Killester, he was a guiding and gentle presence in our community. I have fond memories of him regularly joining our family for Sunday dinners—his warmth, kindness, and quiet wisdom left a lasting impression on all of us.
Please accept my sincere condolences. He will be fondly remembered.
May he rest in peace.

Very sorry to hear of Fr Padraigs passing. We heard too late to attend the funeral but Fr Padraig was a great friend of the family since his time in Eadestown parish. Sincere condolences to all the family.
Many condolences to Fr McCarthy's extended family and his wide circle of friends. At the Royal Irish Academy we came to know him through his generous collobaration with us as we built the website (at Confessio.ie) that provides a portal to reliable information about St Patrick - he provided the English translation of the Saint's own Latin writing! Never seeking any publicity (or remuneration) for himself, Padraig's only concern was that his fifth-century namesake, and their shared values, should become better known to his compatriots (and, indeed, worldwide). As the site has now received well over a third of a million visits, this "quiet vision" of his is continuing to be realized ...
So sorry to learn of the death of Fr. McCarthy. I remember him from his time in Rathdrum as a kind, gentle and learned man with a great interest in history. I treasure the book he compiled about Peter Cunningham-Grattan entitled 'The Roving Bard' and the booklet that accompanied our Jubilee Pilgrimage walk on 21st May 2000. My deepest sympathy to his family and the many parishioners he served so well over the years.

Bhí an t-ádh linn i Balally gur tháinig Pádraig inár dtreo mar ba sagart den chéad scoth é. Bhi sé de shíor i mbun taighde ar bhealaigh chun Fochal Dé a dhéanamh níos soiléire don phobal. Thar aon ní eile, bhí sé cairdiúil cneasta le gach éinne. Mothaífimíd do easnaimh, a Phádraig uasal.
