So sorry to hear of the untimely death of our dear classmate Fr. Tom Rafferty [ Freshford 1958 – 1963] ; I met Tom for the first time since our days together in Secondary School at A SMALL RENUNON OF Freshfordians in the AISLING HOTEL in 2018.
I must say he looked a ‘million dollars’ and he was very much at ease amongst all of us ‘seculars’. His gentle easy-going manner masked a zealous commitment to his missionary work in Pakistan. And if we are to take any heart from this very sad occasion, it is that Tom would have had his wish, namely, to spend his last days among his own – his adopted people.

Small consolation however to his brothers, sisters ,his extended family , his fellow MHMs, his classmates and friends.

I was with Tom for 9 years in Nowshera Pakistan, 90-99 We had very exciting times together hardly a week passed without a crisis great or small but we carried on. Tom was a great missionary, not just in starting this work in the mountains but keeping it going despite all the attacks, personal and political. Last year I congratulated him on his 50 years in Pakistan and said (joking) that this would mean he had done his time in Purgatory. He is now at rest, taking the reward of his many years of faithful service.

Will never forget the warm welcome Fr Tom Rafferty gave me when I dropped in out of the blue to see him in Nowshera en route from Warsak
on the Kabul river to Islamabad when on holiday in Pakistan in 1997.. Very impressed to meet the Sisters of the order he founded. May he rest in peace.
