I first met Frankie McNamee in the 1960s, when I was in my early teens. He had finished his time in the army and came to stay with my mother and father and two sisters when he worked in London. My mother, Mary Jane (Maguire) McCabe, was his aunt.
During his stay he taught me and my two sisters how to play poker, three card brag and nine card brag and whilst he was one of the kindness people I’ve known in my life, kindness never extended to giving back the pocket money he won from young children (and it was never expected to be given back).
We then lost contact and it was only about 20 years ago my sister Maureen re-established contact with him and we visited him in Ballycastle. It was good to see that he was still the same kind and gentle soul I had known 30 years earlier; time hadn’t wearied him. And boy did he serve a good pint of Guinness!
One of the good people departed this week and will be sorely missed.
