Thank you Frank for all the fun birdwatching outings during our many happy years in Tralee. You little anecdotes like the one about the heron and his comb and powder puff have been imparted to the next generation Mc carthy birdwatchers in Germany, France, Dublin and Tramore and received with great delight. Our many friends in our Tralee birding group must feel a great sadness at this time but also happy to have had such a wonderful mentor and friend. Happy birding up there, Frank. Tina & Des Mc Carthy & family

Sincere sympathy to the King Family on the sad passing of Frank. May he Rest in Peace.
I first saw Frank as he led a small group of birdwatchers into old Tralee Dump in search of gulls! I'll most remember Frank though, with telescope by his side and a group of birdwatchers around him, on the Saturday morning birdwatching outings overlooking Blennerville mudflats. Very witty, he possessed an immense depth of knowledge of birds, but was above all a gentleman.
My sincere condolences to all the extended King family. Blennerville, Tralee and Kerry are much the poorer for his passing.

Deepest sympathy to all the extended King families on the passing of Frank. He was a household name. On Kerry radio he transported us to a level where we could think and talk and interpret like a bird. Such lovely images he created. Please would Kerry radio do a cd compilation of his programmes. That way we can hold on to the peace and joy he exudes. Angels of heaven will rejoice at his coming to his true home.

Uncle disappearing in the nightly dark off to the dawn chorus in a nearby park
Or drop what you’re doing & jump in the car
For a rare bird sighting in a county afar.
After working in law you followed a louder call
That reflected what you valued, nature & wildlife all.
With enthusiasm, humour & that wonderful speaking voice
You engaged the community to make a similar choice.
For your knowledge was a gift that you willingly shared
Inspiring generations to see that they cared
About hedges & bats & birds & trees
The cuckoo's call, the corncrakes' fields.
Many a generation joined your Kerry trips
Around the Maharees or under Skellig cliffs.
With your wisdom & wit, facts became stories
Which beautifully revealed nature’s sweet glories.
An expert on cruises you'd oft smile to yourself,
That the only non-millionaires were yourself & the chef!
Yet you had wealth in the things that you knew
Your unique way of sharing & your committed point of view.
That sharp sense of humour
That joyful laugh
A life beautifully lived & not by half.
We will mourn you now, & shed a tear
Us bird watchers & twitchers; We the Radio Kerry listeners,
For the man with the binoculars, the Thursday voice in our ear.
Now humble uncle, caring brother, treasured friend
Its your humour will delight us & remind us in the end
That your message lives on & we will honour your wish
To love & protect your birthplace here at Sliabh Mish.
So if you are out & hear a bird sing, stop, enjoy, & remember Frank King.

Sincere sympathy to the King Family on the passing of Frank. We greatly enjoyed his broadcasts on Radio Kerry. Rest in Peace Frank
Sorry to hear of the death of Frank, a gentle man to the core. Frank's contribution to ornithology in Kerry and wider afield is inestimable, going back to a time when such an interest was less popular than today. Frank, along with a very small band of enthusiasts including his friends Patrick Kennedy, Robert Ruttledge and Liam O'Flynn firmly laid the foundations.

A fountain of knowledge about nature, especially Tralee Bay, and always willing to share it. May his gentle soul Rest in Peace.
I remember Frank from his early legal days. Always a gentleman.May birdsong surround him as he rests in peace.
On behalf of all of us who were mentored by Frank in the study of natural history, we wish to offer our heartfelt sympathies to the King family. Frank was a gentleman to the core, who freely passed on his wide-ranging knowledge of nature to a large audience without fuss, often with matching humour on the subject in question and at times with a little roguery to make sure you retained his object lesson of the day.
A special thanks to Kerry Radio for transmitting Frank's infectious fascination with Birds to his large audience both at home and abroad. And to the staff at Ocean View Nursing Home, he was extremely content in your care. For his warmth, kindness, humanity, modesty and his remarkable contribution to nature study, we were so fortunate to be exposed to such a unique and elegant raconteur.
Frank was a devout man and I know he would share the sentiments of Michelangelo who wrote:
" If we have been pleased with life, we should not be displeased with death, since it comes from the hand of the same master"
