When Frank discovered the Bum Bum Cyclists he found purpose, place and peace. His prowess as a communicator was influential. A typical BBCC weekend would begin with an email from Frank by way of summons to a meticulously planned itinerary beginning at a train station in Dublin leading to some remote hostelry on a way that was wild and Atlantic long before someone joined up those dots and would end the following day at the same train station.
During the journey he would ventilate his opinion without invitation on any subject known to man directed at his tribe of equally opinionated individuals. The resulting verbal exchange was never designed to find agreement but rather to provoke argument. The alluring aspect of this experience was Frank's ability to orchestrate it through a constant punctuation of hilarious anecdotes not always appropriate to the topic under discussion but guaranteed to reduce pugilistic tendencies to flamboyant gesticulation.
"If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong!"
The memory of Frank doing this while approaching the peak of Mont Ventoux in a low gear on his 70th birthday will remain with me all my life.
