To the Given family.

Sincere condolences on the passing of your father. I worked with Prof Given as a junior doctor, having been taught by him as a student at UCG. I enjoyed working with him. He had a vision for surgical service in the West of Ireland as Professor and Head of Department of Surgery, which lives on after his passing. In his various roles he helped to improve the lives of so many people.

May he Rest in Peace.

Dr Barry O'Donovan, UCG Alumnus and former NUIG Lecturer
(Maunsell's Road, currently Australia)
Belated condolences Mark, Elaine and family on the passing of your Dad. May he rest in peace.
It was with great sadness I read of Fred’s passing. My deepest sympathies to Kathryn and the whole family.

For those of us who had the great good fortune to be taught as medical students, trained as surgeons and mentored through our research at the NBCRI by Fred was an extraordinary privilege. He was a gifted and talented surgeon, but most especially a compassionate and empathic doctor to his patients, including my grandmother whom he treated before he returned to Galway as Professor of Surgery. He saw the ‘big picture’ and his life’s work in establishing the NBCRI has and will continue to benefit patients for years to come. A truly fitting legacy to a wonderful man.

May he rest in peace.
To Elaine, Mrs Given, and all your family, sincere condolences and much love to all of you at this very sad time.
May Fred be bathed in the light of Heaven. Rest in Peace.

Sincere sympathy to the Given family on the sad passing of Fred.
I have the fondest memories of the Professor during my time as a young Matron finding my feet in the Regional Hospital as it was known at the time in 1984. He was unbelievably supportive and kind and always showed enormous respect for patients, relatives and staff. He was held in such high regard. On my first Christmas I received a lovely bouquet of flowers from him and his wife Kathyrn with a card from Roscommon, It gave me a great feeling of home support, he was a very thoughtful gentleman and a great surgeon.

Prof. Given was the Prof of Surgery when I was a medical student and SHO in Galway a long time ago. He left a lasting impression at that time. Now, I am a radiologist in the GUH Symptomatic Breast Unit which he set up many years ago; it has gone from strength to strength. He has left a lasting legacy which has helped and treated so many people in the west of Ireland; the Unit has been & continues to be of benefit to so many. Rest in peace, Prof.

The Bed of Heaven to Prof. Fred Given. He was a kind and wonderful surgeon. I was sick but other doctors said I wasn’t! My friend Dr. Frances Conway said: “If Prof. Given says you’re not sick, then you’re not.” The Prof. told me I needed surgery the next day. He was right, the others were wrong. Heartfelt sympathy to the Given family.
