I have many fond memories of growing up in Collon, and Freddie was very much a part of that. From a young age, I clearly remember going to “Freddie’s” with my mum or dad for fuel, getting a sweet in the shop (which was built onto the house at the time), and being greeted by that familiar smell of garage oil that Freddie lived and worked in. It was a great experience – from sweets to dog food, and even a pair of boots always in stock.

As the years went on, Freddie developed the new filling station and would often chat to me about his ambitions. The last time I spoke to Freddie, about 18/24 months ago, he asked how I was getting on and was genuinely delighted to hear that I was doing well, married, and with a baby. I remember driving away from the pump, looking back, and seeing Freddie sitting in his car, smiling and giving me a thumbs-up – a real testament to his personality and his goodwill towards others.

Between Anne Marie and Freddie, you never knew what kind of greeting you might get in the shop – from a big smile and a warm welcome to “Maguire, what do you want?” – but either way, you always left with a smile.
