I have fond memories of visiting Gay in Rathgar and him popping out to see us in Celbridge. Kind, smart and witty I always felt happy in his presence. Rest in Peace Uncle Gay we will miss you.
Gay grew up on Rathgar Avenue in the 40s and 50s. During Gay’s youth, the avenue was full of young families, a sort of Dub Sesame Street where Protestant, Catholic and Jewish children played together. Gay, his five brothers and his older sister Clare were always in the thick of it. The boys played piggy sticks in the alley behind the avenue, and walked together to Orwell and Bushy Parks along the Dodder, where they learned to swim and to catch fish with improvised lures. Gay was the rare master of all trades – an able carpenter, metalworker, and stone-mason and, like his father, Joseph Curran Sr., a gifted gardener. Gay had a life-long love of the great outdoors. Alongside J.B. Malone and others, he pioneered the Wicklow Way. Later, Gay hiked the entire Spanish leg of the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, accompanying the broadcaster Donncha O'Dualing in one of the first Irish contingents to attempt the challenging walk. When he was not hillwalking, Gay was to be found in a book or in his Rathgar garden. Gay was close to his many nephews and nieces, and, for many years, the highlight of Christmas Day for the extended Curran family was in the “piano room” at Rathgar. In later years, Gay divided his time between Rathfarnham and a cottage near his father’s roots in Fenagh, Leitrim, which he helped to renovate. All the Curran siblings met for drinks in Wynn's Hotel on Abbey Street to discuss the "heroes of renown/the passing tales and glories" and the city made of their town.

My sincere condolences to Fergus and all the Curran family on the loss of their brother Gay. Gay was one of the stalwarts of Mountain Meitheal and was made an honorary member at our 15th anniversary for his outstanding contribution to our work in mountain conservation. Gay was a quiet man with a great dry sense of humour and a great work ethic. We spent many great days in the hills and some special nights camping under the stars in Mayo and Maine. Gay will be missed by us all, may he rest in peace.

Sincere sympathy to Gay's family on his passing. I had the pleasure of dealing with him many times when I worked for Murrays Europcar at Cork Airport. It was a pleasure to deal with him. Rest in Peace Gay.
We are saddened to learn of the sudden death of Gay Curran and send our heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends. We were very involved in the early days of Mountain Meitheal and it was a real pleasure to work alongside Gay. His friendly enthusiasm in the club was infectious. Our age and health prevents us going out on the Meitheal nowadays. However, it was always nice, during the Covid lockdowns, to bump into Gay on our regular walks in the neighbourhood and catch up with his news. We last met him a few weeks ago in the hills at a Mountain Meitheal commemoration for another past member. They will be sorely missed.
