My heartfelt condolences to his family. He was an inspirational History Lecturer from 2002 to 2005. I recall students regularly packing into a lecture theatre and sitting on the floor because there were not enough seats, that is how popular he was. May he rest in peace. Siobhan Keane Hopcraft, UCC

My sincere condolences to Gillian, Méabh, Oscar, and Una, and to Gabriel's extended family and friends on the sad news of his passing. During my time studying history in UCC, I had the good fortune to have witnessed Gabriel's passion for teaching and his genuine interest in people. His letter after my first year studying history, encouraging me to continue my studies is a memory that has always stood to me, and I'm glad I listened to his advice.
Gabriel was always very approachable and friendly, but had a keen competitive side too which came out during a staff versus students football match during my Masters year in 2007! He later also really helped me when I was studying overseas at one point during my PhD, for which I will always be grateful.
As remembered by a number of my friends who also studied history and met him over the years, he was "a gent and a scholar". RIP Gabriel.

Gabriel was a scholar and a gentleman. An erudite and valued colleague, and above all a friend. My sympathy to all the family.
We were so sorry to hear of the loss of Gabriel.
He was both a great student and teacher of History. He visited Colaiste Choilm to talk to both prospective students of Senior History and Senior students themselves. His deep knowledge of the detail, his empathy for the characters and his capacity to tell 'the story' always ensured his audience were fully engaged.
Above all he was a gentleman in every respect and wore his erudition lightly.
His contribution to History, and to education, will ripple into the decades ahead.
Sincere condolences to his lovely family.
Cathal Leahy.

On behalf of the Clonmult Ambush Commemoration Committee we would like to express our deepest sympathy to Gill, Meabh, Oscar, Una and your extended families on the sad passing of Gabriel. We were very honoured on the 20th February 2020 when Gabriel accepted our invitation to deliver the Oration at the 99th Anniversary of the Battle of Clonmult. Gabriel may your gentle soul rest in peace.
I had the privilege of both being a student of Gabriel's, and in recent years a colleague at UCC and in both roles he was a gentleman. He also dutifully stood in goals for my then five-year-old daughter, who wanted to try camogie when her curiosity brought us down to an open day at Douglas GAA. She's been going back every week for the past two years since.
My sincere condolences to Gillian, Méabh, Oscar, Una, and the wider Doherty family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Sincere sympathies to Gabriel's family on your devastating loss. Gabriel left a lasting influence on many of the teachers here in SHSS during our own studies in UCC. Sympathies to all of Gabriel's family and friends. I have nothing but fond memories of him from my undergraduate days, back when he was both a lecturer and my tutor. Since my postgraduate days up until only recent months when I last bumped into him in town, he was always so pleasant and approachable: he is a true loss.

A wonderful human being with an admirable character, love and support for others, humility, gentleness and cheerfulness. The first Irishman to invite me out for a coffee shortly after my arrival in Ireland from Kenya, having met at St.St.Columbus Church,Douglas, from where he also introduced me to his family- the 2 very lovely, well trained and respectiful children. He made me feel welcome and appreciated and he would subsequently be helpful on significant aspects of my life , including recommending me for Irish citizenship, which I happily got.I am extremely heartbroken that Gabriel left us to be with the Lord.He will forever be missed here on earth, but one more saint is gained in heaven
Condolences to the Doherty family on the sad passing of Gabriel. I remember his course on Northern Ireland from my time at UCC in the early nineties.
