So very sorry to hear of Garret's untimely death. He was a wonderful colleague who assisted many of us over so many years in his quiet thoughtful way. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends at this time. He will be greatly missed.

The most courteous, urbane and erudite of men, my abiding memory is of him entering the UCC staff restaurant at lunch time carrying a copy of The Irish Times which he would generally peruse apart. But he could also be a lively and witty conversationalist when he wished, with a particular interest in cultural matters, especially those relating to the Irish language, I have lost a valued friend and offer my sincere sympathy to Garret's father , brother and nephew, and to the other grieving members of his family whose loss is immeasurable.

Garret was a founder-member of MusiCórum chamber choir. He had shared the quality of his voice and his profound musicality with various choirs in Cork over the last three decades, and to MusiCórum he also brought his professional skills by being its librarian, and his unique combination of perspicacity, loyalty and commitment as a member of the committee.

We were shocked and saddened to hear of Garret’s death just an hour before singing in the Honan Chapel. At the choir's rehearsal weekend earlier in the month, he had expressed the enormous pleasure he found in the Monteverdi "Mass in F for four voices" and how impressed he was with Milo McCarthy's new work, "Animam meam levavi". Our Honan performance was highly emotional and we were honoured to be invited to add to that by contributing to the memorial service.

In the address given at the memorial service by UCC's Alan Carbery, Garret's intelligence, linguistic skills, and supportive and empathetic character were all highlighted as making him a much valued colleague. We also appreciated his dry and sharp wit! He was a wonderful colleague and chorister and we will miss him greatly.

MusiCórum is much the poorer for his passing.

I will miss so much about Garret…singing with him, eating Centra apple tart at our MusiCórum committee meetings and sharing funny cat memes. He was one of a kind - so gentle with a wicked, wry sense of humour.
