My sincere sympathy to Gene's family on his passing. One of nature's gentlemen. I have great memories of him as a stylish mid fielder in the 1960's when Eire Og brought a new brand of football to Co. Carlow and I looking on in envy as a Tullowman! And later, when I had the honour of being president of Eire Og during the glory days of the 1990's, witnessing his commitment, hard work, level headedness and steady hand as Chairman and club member. Arguably THE greatest Eire Og person since its foundation passed away to his eternal reward on Tuesday With the club since it’s infancy in 1956, he was an ever present in all club affairs since, even while working away in UCD for many of those early years. He won awards at all levels on the football fields from '60-'69. He was imperious at midfield during that successful period. A leader of men both on & off the field, he never shirked a situation & was admired by friend & foe for all his exploits. So much the esteem he had created he was asked to receive the AIB GAA club of the year in 2002 assisted by his dear friend & neighbour John Farrell. He also served on committees at all levels, including chair person. His lasting friendships with club president Sean Swan is legendary, meeting every Wednesday night at our clubhouse Cork man Tony O Donovan, a business acquaintance, Richie Moore, Conor & Tom Small Genes son Robert & John Brophy joined into all the hilarity.
But for the All Ireland Club Championships not beginning until 1971, our club teams of the 60s would surely have come close to national prominence.

Gene Kelly walked on water, but Genie Kelly walked on air, never asked for any return.

To his loving wife Fran sons Stephen and Robert, ever present daughter Karen, her husband Paul, children, grandchildren & great grandchildren, we extend our deepest sympathies.
