I was saddened when I learned,just today,of George's death.
He and I went back a long way,to 1972 in fact,when we both worked for Shanagolden building contractor,PJ Scanlon.I remember on a number of occasions actually PJ or one of his men driving in to collect Georgie I'm sure we called him.He was a painter,I was a labourer.I was 16,he was a couple of years older.I have no memory of anyone telling me at the time of the appalling,senseless deaths of his younger sisters just a few years earlier.
It was years later that I met him again.
I was teaching in Christ the King BNS and George was a caretaker there for a period in the 1980s.I remember him being musical,playing the guitar and getting on famously with Mrs.Eanna O'Connell who produced ceoldrámaí at various Slógadhs.
I met him a few years ago outside Whitty's Mace in Caherdavin and we had a chat.He was living in the Lawn and I meant to pay him a visit.Unfortunately I never did.On Saturday I will give a call to Mrs.O'Connell in case she hasn't heard the news.It was just pure luck that I found out myself.
