George was and will always be a legend -- business that always banked with the Old National on South Mall ( like Dwyers) going back to the founder of the National Bank - Daniel O'Connell and similarly customers that always used the Old bank of Ireland - like the established church CoI businesses who wouldn't have dreamt of touching AIB never mind old M&L suddenly became "customers" of AIB - why ? because of George - his decency, intellect and charm. He made mince meat of the competitors and was the best CEO AIB never had.... highly unlikely the bank would have ended up in the bin if he was at the wheel.. Mary and family and many many friends. I was so terribly sorry to hear of the death of this amazing man. He was so unique and always a pleasure to work for him in AIB (when it was a Real Bank). In his opinion, the real HQ of AIB was Cork and not ( in his words) that shower in Bankcentre. He would request me to come down from Dublin to sort out many of his branches in his region. It was an absolute pleasure to have known such a Legend and our lives are so much richer from having known him
