Comhbhrón ó chroí libh.I have fond memories of the great help that George gave to us in the early days of Gaelscoileanna over 40 years ago during his time in the OPW and later in An Roinn Oideachais especially when faced with challenging projects. One in particular that comes to mind is Gaelscoil Inse Chór which would not never have been built on it’s location without George’s relentless determination to get the job done in very challenging times. Laoch ar lár.
Dear Catherine, Conor and Fionnuala, Sincere condolences on the loss of George. I had the pleasure of transcribing manuscripts and assisting George in publishing his memoir in the late 90s when I worked in the Dept of Ed. He was a kind soul and generous with his knowledge and wisdom. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Rosemarie and Gerry, please accept my deepest sympathy on the death of your brother. May he rest in peace.
Kathleen, from Eileen and I, our sincerest sympathies to you, Conor, Fionnuala and your family on the very sad passing of George. George was my very first manager in the 'Service when I joined the OPW in Jan 1980. What a mentor and friend I gained that day ! As well as his widely acknowledged administrative talents and his very good natured approach in helping people, he was such a literary genius, story writer, ballad writer, singer and raconteur. I enjoyed his company and learned so much from him over the 10 years we worked together. I also very much enjoyed our few meet ups after I headed West, including at a couple of Listowel All-Ireland Fleadhs. Reading all of the lovely tributes here, George is so highly regarded and I will certainly never forget him. May he rest in peace.

Sincere condolences to Kathleen, Gerry and all of George's family. George was a wonderful colleague for many years at OPW. He was intelligent, a great worker, and had a great sense of humour. It was always a pleasure to be with him socially and work-related. George was also a staunch Trade Unionist with a strong sense of justice for everybody. He was one of the first people I met on my first visit to Listowel Writers Week, where he is so highly regarded. Heaven will be a livelier place with George around.
