Sincere condolences to George's family. He was a very generous person and we had many very interesting and stimulating discussions on Carboniferous geology and beyond. I will never forget my first visits to Ireland and TCD some 20 years ago, but there are also profound memories on other field trips and conferences around the world.
Sincere sympathy to Rose and all the Sevastopulo family on George’s death. May he rest in peace.
To Rose and family,
Sincere condolences to you all.
Sincere condolences to you all.
Dear Rose & Family, we were all very sorry to hear the sad news about George, what a lovely man. May he rest in peace.
Deepest condolences to George's family at this sad time, he will be missed by many. May he Rest In Peace.
Dear Rose and family, I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. George was always very supportive to me in early-80’s TCD in his suffer-no-fools, twinkly-smile sort of a way and I especially thank him for introducing me to the wonders of Johnson’s Baby Oil – essential for the enhancement of fossil nautiloid photographs! Sorry to say I didn’t keep as in touch as I would have liked, but 20-plus years later in the GSI Geoheritage Programme, I could still tap his brain on any obscure geological site he had visited decades earlier and know that I would get the definitive version. Thinking of you all.
Sincere condolences to George's family. He was my College tutor when I was an undergraduate in Trinity and the first academic staff member I met as an overwhelmed first year. I have never forgotten how welcoming and kind he was to me.
Sincerest condolences to George's family on his passing. George was a great teacher who was extremely generous with his time and support of his students. He was a positive influence on all of us who studied at TCD. I think most of us will be remembering George's keen sense of humour and happier times back in the Geology Department. He will be missed.
Sending sincere condolences to all your family. George was a kind, thoughtful, and intelligent gentleman. It was a privilege to study under him at Trinity. He showed interest in specialties beyond his own field and continued to contribute as a role model long after he officially retired, showing a love for the value of education. He was the single professor who took time out of class to enquire about our future plans before graduating. He will be missed by many.
Dear Rose , Marigo and all the family,
Sending my sincere condolences at this sad time for you all. May George now rest in peace. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. With love, Suzanne

George will be much missed for his erudition as a scholar but above all his kindness as a person, which made him such an effective teacher, including of those like myself who did not actually study with him but who learned from him nonetheless, in my case as a much younger member of the Royal Irish Academy. He was strongly committed as well to the scientist as public intellectual and to the welfare of institutions as well as people. Rest in peace.
My sincere condolences to George's family, friends and colleagues on his death.
I always enjoyed having lunch with him in the East Dining Hall. Great conversation laced with humour and knowledge. That unmistakable voice and accent. Any time I went mountaineering in the Alps I would send him my images of flowers spotted in the screes and high pastures for identification.

Deepest sympathy to all the family
Rose and. Family, all of my thoughts are with you at this time of loss. Like many of his former students I remember George with great fondness. He had such a talent for finding humour in any situation and turning it into a good story. He certainly brightened our time in TCD. I have a particular reason to be grateful to George for he spoke up for us women students and ensured we were allowed to study geology at TCD. Seems very odd to say this now, but in the early sixties there was opposition to this weird idea.
I am deeply saddened by the death of George. He was always so generous and kind. I will always remember him with great fondness. My sincere condolences to his beloved Rose and family.
May he rest in peace.

My sincerest condolences to Rose and family. George was very kind to me when I had tough times during my college years. He watched out for people in the department and took care of them. He was always generous with his time and his knowledge. A gentleman.

I am very sorry to hear of George's passing. George was kind and welcoming when I joined Trinity and he was always generous with his time and vast knowledge. He will be greatly missed and warmly remembered by myself and by everyone who passed through the geology department
I think I was probably among some of the first undergraduates that George lectured after he arrived at Trinity and subsequently he seemed to be a permanent fixture. Almost 25 years ago by a piece of serendipity I was offered the Wollaston Medal (the highest award of the Geological Society of London) from 1852 awarded to one of Trinity’s most famous geologists, William Henry Fitton. For reasons unknown it had turned up in Toronto and it was suggested that I contact George and, of course, he remembered me, was very interested in Fitton and jumped at the opportunity to have it for the department where it now resides. Such was the man. It won’t seem the same in the Museum Building without his presence. With my condolences to his family.
Sincere condolences to George's family, especially Demetri. It was always a pleasure to meet George in the Common Room, We cherished his wit and wisdom.
Rose and family, we were saddened to learn of George's passing. He was a stalwart of the HS Horticulture Society and so generous with his time and extensive knowledge.
Please accept our sincere condolences. May George Rest in Peace.

My condolences to George’s family and friends on his passing. George was one of those people who made the geology department in TCD a special place and a fantastic learning environment. He had such presence. I found him to be kind, helpful, and wise and to this day there are things he thought us that I still draw on. He leaves a great legacy and I hope that is some comfort to those who loved him.
I am very sorry to hear about George’s passing. My sincere condolences to his family. During my time at TCD, it was always a pleasure to chat with him. He was extremely knowledgeable, always offered great advice and was very generous with his time.
It was great sadness that I learned of George’s passing. I got to know George while teaching geology in UCD because of the close relationship between UCD and TCD geology colleagues. Visiting the Museum building in Trinity and at conferences and other events, George could be relied upon for a lovely warm greeting and a genuine interest in what I was doing. When I moved away from Dublin and from geology, and into archaeology where I work now as an illustrator, I was delighted always to cross paths with George at the RIA from time to time in his new guise, that of one interested in the identification of rocks found in archaeological settings, and we would strike up a conversation. I shall miss these brief encounters and will remember them fondly. My deepest sympathy goes out to Rose and all George’s family and friends at this sad time. May George rest in well-deserved peace.
George hired me many moons ago as part of the student summer scheme. Im not sure he would remember me but his kindness and patience towards me has ensured that I have never forgotten him. A truly lovely man. Condolences to his family. RIP
Dear Rose and family, we were very sorry to hear the sad news about George, please accept our sincere condolences.
He was not just a fountain of geological knowledge, but also an expert on the flora of the Burren which he demonstrated on a number of field trips. He leaves behind so many friends and colleagues and also so many happy memories.
May he rest in peace.

George was a valued longtime member of the Royal Irish Academy's Working Group on Culture and Heritage. Sending condolences to all his family at this sad time.
We were very sad to hear about George's passing. When we moved to Ireland and joined TCD in 2018 he was always happy to help us settle in and help us find our way in the Irish research community. I have very fond memories of, and will miss the many coffee-morning discussions, sometimes about geology, but often about a much wider variety of topics, the news of the day, gardening etc.
Our deepest sympathies to Rose and family and friends. He will be deeply missed by many.

I am so sorry to hear of George's passing. I knew George through his time as the Dean of Graduate Studies in Trinity College Dublin and he was so helpful to me and so generous with his time, his wisdom and his sound judgement when I had queries. Sincere condolences to all his family and friends. Helen Thornbury
Sincere condolences to all the family and loved ones of George.
We are so sorry for your loss. George was a very special person and he will be much missed by all who knew him. Sincere condolences to Rose and all the family.
My sincere condolences on the loss of George from your lives. I remember him fondly from my student days at Trinity.
Dear Rose, I just heard the very sad news about George. I'm so sorry I never made contact over the summer, I think I thought George would always be here. I know how fond Matthew was of George from when they first met in the Geology department in Trinity and having gotten to know him myself really at alpine shows and through the HSHS I too always looked forward to meeting you both. George was so knowledgeable about all things plant wise. My deepest sympathy to you and all the family.
Dear Rose and family,
I am so saddened to hear of the passing of George. He was such a tour de force - a real character, and an amazing thinker, but always with heart. He always had time for the little guy and always made sure to check in with the young Irish researchers at conferences. When I was a green PhD student he was so welcoming and positive and encouraging. I've enjoyed many conversations with him since and he continued to proffer useful insights and advice along the way. A real character and a real gentleman. I will miss him a lot.

Dear Rose and family, we were so sorry to hear of George's passing. Our sincerest condolences to you all.
George was such a huge part of our lives in the 90's when we did our PhDs under his guidance. Not only was he a man of great intelligence and wisdom but the kindest of men too. He always looked out for us and became a good friend. We are grateful for all he taught us and the time he generously gave, that went far and beyond the role of a supervisor. We have great memories of the times we spent with him.
He will be greatly missed,

My sympathy to Rose and George’s family. They were fortunate to have such a kind and wise human being in their family. Our paths crossed first in the RIA, where he offered his friendship and support on many occasions, particularly in ensuring that the tradition of natural science studies was maintained. Then later, at many garden events, he was so generous with his time and expertise. It is sad to know we will not meet again, but his positive influence on so many people remains with us.
I was very sorry to hear of George's passing. As a Trinity College Physics lecturer (now retired) I knew him for many years, especially through our lunchtime discussions, and I was always interested in the stories that he would tell us. I offer my sincere condolences to his family.
Dear Rose, I was so saddened to read of George’s death and send you my deepest sympathy. I had always hoped we might meet up again but it wasn’t to be.
I have just watched George’s funeral service and thought it so well done. It captured him so well and it was very moving to see how upset your grandchildren are. I wept too.

We send sincere condolences to Rose and Family on the death of George. Ian and I were recipients of the Sevastopolu hospitality and formed a firm friendship with Rose and George and delighted in their sparkling company whenever possible. An erudite fellow of most amiable disposition and great humour, George won friends wherever he went, as evidenced by his many friends in the Scottish Rock Garden Club. He will be much missed, by all who knew and loved him. We are thinking fondly of Rose and their Family at this time.
That was a lovely service for George. He was a great scholar and a wonderful, kind man.
My sincere condolences to George's family. George will be sorely missed by all in the palaeontological community - the PalAss Annual Meeting will not be the same without him. His breadth of knowledge was remarkable and he was encouraging to so many. He was very kind to me both during my time at TCD and in my current role, always listening attentively and offering sage advice.
My sincere condolences to all of George's family. George was a giant of Irish geology and helpful to all. He will be missed.

As a Trinity geology graduate from 1976, George had a big influence on my career encouraging me to pursue interests in economic geology, computer applications and statistics. My undergraduate project carried out under his supervision involved measuring the dimensions of blastoid fossils and then processing the results using a computer program for principal components analysis which had to be entered on punched cards. This was in the very early days of computer applications in geology and to my mind reflected George's ability to pick upcoming trends before they became widely adopted.
I never ceased to be amazed by George's wide range of interests and enjoying catching up with him on return visits to Ireland. His unique insights will be much missed.

Sincerest condolences to Rose and Family. George was such an exceptional person; and so considerate when sharing his extensive knowledge to so many people. I am so grateful for all I learnt at TCD and HSHS.
To Ann and all the Sevastopulo family our deepest condolences. George was an incredible man and a formidable witness when I was lucky enough to have him work with my team dealing with the Pyrite cases in north County Dublin. He is also likely to be the only Geologist ever to have given evidence on the beach in Rush in front of a High Court Judge discussing the "Rush Formation" and then later that same day giving evidence on the Quarry floor pointing out the different benches and strata. Every word He spoke and report he wrote was worth listening to and reading. May He rest in peace.
Sincere condolences to the Sevastopulo family on your sad loss. I got to know George through his work on Knowth particularly, and also from his involvement more broadly with the Royal Irish Academy. He was so knowledgeable on such a wide variety of subjects, always very generous with his time, and great company. He was also very kind and had a great sense of fun. He will be greatly missed by very many people. My deepest sympathy to George's family at this difficult time.
Saddened to read of demise of George, a talented teacher and researcher at TCD geology. My student time was enriched by his knowledge of everything “Carboniferous “ in the world. He edited a short paper of mine earlier this year.. My thanks and fond memories.
Sincere condolences to George's family & friends, may he rest in peace. Fond memories of his lectures and popping into his office for project advice. Always so kind, patient and fascinating to listen to.
Sincere sympathies Rose,Ann & all the family. I have great memories of meeting George at Bloom each year. Thinking of you all.
