Our sincere sympathy to Gerry’s family and all his loved ones at this difficult time. It was a pleasure to meet Gerry every summer when we returned to our much loved Inis Oirr. Gerry, you brought our families on many fishing trips..they may not have caught many fish but gathered so many wonderful memories. You will be missed. May you rest in peace Gerry.
I met Gerry on my first trip to Inis Oirr and loved his openness and friendship and met him on many subsequent visits. The trip wasn’t right until I had met him and he was such fun but really sound.

I’m from America, and while visiting Inis Oirr for the first time in traveling with a lifelong friend, in the summer of 2001, I was on the beach just outside of Tigh Ned’s. I had my old fashioned camera with me, hoping for the last beam of late night sunlight to capture the beauty of it all!. On the rocks along the shoreline, a silhouette started to walk towards me. In the darkness, a voice like no other said, “whatch you doin out here lass?” I said “I’m taking photos but there’s no light!” I then said, “whatch you doin out here?” The voice said, “I’m fishin’ but there’s no fish! Come on let’s go in to the pub and have a drink!” That moment changed my life forever! A whole new Irish world of friends and chosen family opened up to me! It was obvious everyone loved Gerry, and he was the informal Mayor of the place. Of perhaps every place and person he encountered! I met Eileen on the shore the next day, and it was an instant bond! She was 6 years old! She reminded me of me at that age! Her jumping from rock to rock with bare feet and a 6th sense for knowing the exact placement of her feet on those majestic rocks was a sight to see! She was the daughter I never had. And then i met the rest of the family over those past few days. I returned every summer for years! The bond was unwavering, regardless of how much time might pass between visits. I wished that traveling from Los Angeles to Inis Oirr was as easy as traveling there from Dublin.

Suaimhneas síoraí Óglach Gerry Cunningham 🇮🇪 Comhbhrón to Gerry's clann from all the Binéad clann, Cromghlinn, Átha Cliath
Gerry was a brilliant friend and colleague. The kids and staff of Ballyfermot loved him. Anyone who met him loved him. He was always in good form and had a kind word for and about almost everyone. He organised my stag on ‘his’ island. All who met him at our wedding at Spanish Point loved him. My wife, Loraine, and I have very fond memories of him. Our son, Oscar, by sheer fluke, is taking the name Gerard for his confirmation. That will forever remind us of him. I’m in Dublin with COVID. I plan on being better on Friday to get to his funeral.
Sincere sympathy to the Cunningham family on the passing of Gerry.
May he Rest In peace.
