Deepest condolences to all Gerard’s family and his friends … I only heard this awful sad news today. Gerard was the kindest most thoughtful teacher to my children in St Mary’s .. a wonderful man who supported so many families in Ashbourne … I am so saddened to hear he has passed away … deepest condolences to all who knew him!

I was deeply saddened to hear of Gerard’s passing. Gerard was the kindest, most thoughtful friend and colleague. I feel so thankful to have worked alongside him and will always remember his genuine kindness, warmth and sense of humour.

Gerard’s passing is an immeasurable loss and he will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to have him in their lives. I extend my deepest sympathies to Gerard’s family during this difficult time. My thoughts are with you all.

Our whole family were deeply saddened to hear of Mr O’Byrne’s passing. Despite not being their class teacher, both our boys have such fond memories of him from their time in St. Mary’s. He managed to have an impact on everyone in the school community and we feel very lucky to have been touched by his genuine kindness and warmth. He was an exceptional part of the St. Mary’s community and has left an unforgettable mark on all who were blessed to have known him. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends, especially those he was so close to from St. Mary’s. May he rest in peace.

I find it hard to find the words on hearing of Gerard's untimely passing. Gerard was an amazing person to be around , because he was always positive in encouraging people , students , and just about everybody who came into his company. I have known Gerard for many years through St. Mary's , he thought my three kids who are now adults , and they had so much to say how Gerard helped them with school ,studies and extra curricular classes at St. Mary's. I pray Gerard is in a great place now , if anybody deserves that its you. I thank him so much for being a great friend to our family. We'll miss you Gerard !.

So very sad to hear of Mr O'Byrne's passing, and particularly as we only heard this evening, too late to attend his funeral. We would have so liked to have been able to pay our respects in person. I hope that in his life he knew how much he meant to his pupils and his school community. We all loved him because he put his heart & soul into all he did. My kids always spoke of him with love, fun and admiration. The annual Christmas Carol concerts were the highlight of everyones year. RIP Mr O'Byrne. You leave a beautiful legacy.

Sympathies to Mr. O'Byrne's family at this sad time. I sid not have the good fortune to have him as a teacher but i remember his love of singing and how he very muched encouraged the art for the young people of Ashbourne. Rest in peace.

I’m so sorry to hear of Mr O’Byrnes passing. He is remembered by my children as such a kind and fun teacher. I’ll always remember his energy at school bazzar and Christmas Carol concert. Mr O’Byrne was the teacher you always wished and crossed your fingers you would get told you were having for the following school year. Although I never had the pleasure of having him as my own class teacher, it didn’t matter as his kind and bubbly nature was felt throughout the school - wherever he went. He took such great care of me when I was unwell in third class, shy and embarrassed for making a fuss but the way he shifted the attention from me put me at ease straight away. I’ll always remember the extra mile he went on that occasion and every other one that followed. Rest in peace Mr O’Byrne, I hope you receive nothing but kindness and tranquility as you deserve nothing less.

My deepest sympathy on the passing of Gerard. He was my most memorable and favourite teacher for 4th class (1994) I loved bumping into him on yard one morning dropping my own child to school and again at the bazaar last year (2023) such a kind man. He will be truly missed and forever remembered.

I apologise that I could make Mr O'Byrne's funeral this morning. I was able to watch it online, not a dry eye in the house and a send off that he so truly deserved and would have been so proud of. I was able to relate to the farm in Ballybin as he brought us on a tour in 5th class to see it and to feed/pet the animals, also his love of France with a French Day in 6th class (1st time most of us in class tried French stick!).You may Rest In Peace now Mr O'Byrne.

I am so terribly sorry to hear this news of Mr O’Byrne. Gerard was a wonderful person and so suited to the profession of Primary Teaching. I will never forget the very genuine welcome Gerard showed towards me when I completed two Teaching Practice placements in St Mary’s NS while training in St.Pats. We shared many stories about our Alma Mater and his love for Gaeilge, music & culture. It was clear his approach towards children was always underpinned by respect & kindness. He saw the best in children and nurtured their individualism in the way he shared reflections about the profession as well as the lovely events he would organise in the school. His huge enthusiasm for the role inspired me then and continues to guide me in my own career. His legacy will never be forgotten by the many lucky to have had Mr.O’Byrne as a Teacher. I'm so unbelievable saddened to hear of the early passing of Mr O'Byrne. He was my teacher in St Mary's when I was about 8 or 9 years old and I think one of the most influential people in my life as a kid.
He inspired my interest in history and art (which is now a large part of my profession) as well as teaching me huge life skills like singing and knitting and got me making drawings for the school magazine.
I regularly remember and think about the things I learned from him and now with a child of my own I find myself teaching her songs and lessons I learned from him.
He was really an amazing teacher and I wouldn't be the person I am today without him.

Mr.O’Byrne was a wonderful person and an amazing teacher. He was always involved in one way or another in making an event special in St.Mary’s. From the Christmas bizzarre, where he always had time to speak to past students about our college courses and dream jobs, to seachtain na gaeilge where he made learning Irish an enjoyable experience with a meet up concert of all the classes in the halla. He made the nativity play so much more than just a play and was always making us laugh. Thank you so much Mr.O’ Byrne for those special times and for making school such a fun and expressive place🫶🏻

Thank you Gerard for the kindness you showed to our daughter while she was in your class in St Mary’s. She was a busy little girl but I always remember you saying to us ‘don’t break her spirit’ and how right you were. Your empathy and care was above and beyond. I met you at a funeral a few years ago and you asked after her and you were delighted to hear how well she has done. That same girl now a Mother herself shed tears this week when she heard the news of your passing. Mam she said Mr O Byrne was so good to me 😢
