Thanks Gerry for the guidance in rowing! Blessings to all the family & friends you have left behind!
I was very sorry to hear of Gerry’s death. He gave many years of dedication to coaching at Commercial Rowing Club. When I joined the club, it was clear how much respect and appreciation was felt for his dedication to the club and to young rowers in particular; many whom went on to very successful rowing careers. He was a lovely man who will be greatly missed by all of the rowing community. Sincere condolences to all of Gerry’s family.

Very sorry to hear of Gerry’s passing. He was an incredible coach and mentor at Commercial. He was friendly, patient and always made sure I performed to the best of the ability. He always gave me chances to prove myself as a rower. It is clear to me that if it weren’t for Gerry’s outstanding work I would not gotten the love and passion for the sport of rowing

Very sorry to hear of Gerry's passing. Hard to imagine the Islandbridge scene without him - from the early days rowing and sculling in the 70's to his many years dedicated to coaching from the tow path.

My sincere condolence to Caroline, and all the Cantan family.
Gerry and I were in the same year, as architectural students, in Bolton Street, during the '60s. We lost contact, after we qualified in 1968. Thankfully, we met up again, as wholetime lecturers in Architectural Technology, D.I.T. (1990-2007). I got to know him, even better, in those later years. I regret not being able to get to his funeral. Gerry was a man of wisdom, wit, and compassion.
One of the good guys! May he rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to all of Gerry’s family. It was an honour to have known Gerry and spent some time with him down the years. His passion for rowing and especially for coaching was intense. He was a great coach who introduced and developed many thousands of young people to the sport. His gentle, intelligent, individual manner, always with a ready, knowing smile was an inspiration. His presence at Islandbridge was long felt and will be longer missed and those who knew him, and those who were coached by him, are the better for it.

Sincerest condolences to Gerry's family.
I was lucky enough to have had Gerry as a tutor in DIT.
He was so generous with his time with every student, extremely astute but what I remember most fondly is that he had a great balance of humour and intent. No doubt he has been a very important and positive influence on a lot of young people as he was for me.
My deepest sympathies with Gerry's family. As a teaching colleague at the School of Architecture, DIT, his commitment to students and their education contributed significantly to the success of several generations of professional technologists.

Gerry Cantan's influence on my life has been nothing short of profound. The amazing formative years rowing under him as a junior, and the privilege of coaching with him later in life, led to my great fortune to have a career in Rowing, Youth Work and Sport Development. Gerry gave us experiences, memories and friendships we will treasure forever. His generosity of spirit and time for anyone who wanted to learn was boundless.

Commercial RC and indeed the whole rowing community is lessened for his passing, but forever greater for having had him. A Great Man,A Gentleman and a true Original. Rest In Peace

Gareth Herbert, Commercial RC, DMRC
