I always found your Dad to be a gentleman and very easy to talk to. His loss to the GAA family is huge but he is a greater loss to your family. I knew Gerry not only through the football, but he was also the foreman at the Teach Duchais in Drumeela, otherwise known as the former Kate's.

No doubt there is might craic in the heavens above, when Gerry meets up with Mickey O'Brien and Jim McCartin again! Three unbelievable characters out doing each other with one liners and telling great stories that should never be forgotten. "Do you remember the summer of 72?".
" I do well... it was of a Sunday, wasn't it "? The 1980 County Championship and the stint in the green and gold with the Leitrim County team was relived and shared time and time again with great pride... and deservedly so! A great embassador for Cloone and the County of Leitrim. The Mick Flavin song: "wild flowers don't care where they grow", lifted the roof of Teach Duchais on many occasion. We had to put extra wide concrete barges on just to keep it down and somewhat in place.
A big man, with a big heart.

I was lucky to play under Gerry when he was county chair, and during his refereeing days. In more recent times, through my role in Croke Park, we were working together on making GAA venues across the country more accessible: as Gerry's own mobility lessened in recent times, his empthy for others remained as strong as ever and he wanted to ensure that everyone could access our games regardless of their age or any impairment. During his time as President of Connacht GAA, he was a great supporter of the GAA for All programme and wheelchair hurling, always championing those outside the mainstream.
Gerry was a great community man and a true gent and will be sorely missed in GAA circles. May he rest in peace.
