We have so many precious memories of out time together playing for Athlone RFC in the 70's when our paths first crossed. As our captain for two years he whipped the players into shape by his leadership and organisation presiding over many training sessions and delivering your message with integrity and fairness but always with a humorous glint in his eyes. As in his career he quickly gained the respect of all who played with him and was largely responsible for Athlone RFC's success in Connacht League and Cup Competitions during the 70's. Truly an Officer and a Gentleman. May you rest in peace Gerry - thanks for the memories.

I read the many warm tributes to Gerry from his Defence force colleagues, friends in Rugby, music and further afield. Gerry coached Rugby to the UCG Under 20’s in 1991-93, in my student days. In team talks he was a leader, a motivator, a planner. “Test the Full back early”.
He brought to us, his depth of experience from playing with Athlone and Connacht in the 70’s.
I always found Gerry very obliging and courteous to myself, and very much an influence.
When you consider what he has achieved incl overseas and UN missions, he has lived a very full life.

Deepest sympathy to Gerry's wife, Rita, sons and daughters, David, Shane, Emer, Maeve and extended family on his sad death. I had the pleasure of serving with Gerry in Defence Forces Headquarters - his career was founded on professionalism, integrity, fairness, respect, humour and with excellent leadership qualities. So sorry I was unable to attend his funeral and extend condolences in person.

I have great memories of serving under him when he was Adjutant 6 Battalion and learning not to pass to close to his office to avoid the six jobs he would give me. His contribution to and leadership in the Defence Forces has left a very special legacy. May he rest in peace.

Gerry was a dear friend to so many of us, and, the best of fun, too. When we were in Jerusalem, his friendship was expressed in tremendous help to me and to my young family. Never forgotten. To all who mourn his passing, my deepest sympathy. Solas na bhFlaitheas ar anam uasal.

A Great Leader , Fine Officer and a True Gentleman on and off the pitch.

It was with great sadness that I heard of the passing of Brig Gen Gerry McNamara. He was GOC 2 Infantry Brigade when I served under his command as one of his staff officers and later as one of his battalion commanders. He was a real leader with a unique common-sense approach to every problem. A pleasure to work he always treated members with respect no matter their rank. Deepest sympathy to Dave and all the McNamara family. May he rest in peace.

My deepest sympathies to all of Gerry's family. Gerry was our U20 coach in UCG the year we won the connacht final and we have so many happy memories to cherish from that time, thanks to him. As a bunch of 19 and 20 year old students, we were in need of a bit of discipline and focus - Gerry gave that to us in abundance!

Myself and Gerry Hanly was waiting for a bus to go to the changng of the guard In Merrion Sq a few years ago and he came out of McKee in a staff car noted our assoc uniform and stopped and picked us up, not only that when we got to Merrion Sq he told us to remain in the car and went round and opened the door and sulated us as we exited the saloon, we met later that evening in the NCO'S Mess and he gave a few balls renderings. Sir may you have eternal rest and all I can do is salute you because you were a men's man.
