My sympaties to Gerry's Family. Gerry was a great friend of my wife Siobhan's dad Billy Devereux. I met Gerry in Kilcommon church on the 1st monday night of the month when he would open the door for me as I carried in my guitar music stand and a rather large Hymn book which included some of Gerry's favourite Slim Whitman Gospel Hymns. Gerry gave me the loan of a Slim Whitman record with the great number I'll walk with God from this day on from The Student Prince, I'm sure Gerry and Billy are now walking with God and Gerry will surely be playing guitar and singing in great voice along with Billy on the accordian. God Rest His Soul.

My deepest sympathy to all the Byrne family. He was a wonderful man. I was sad to hear of his passing and I wrote this on my FB page.
Today a great friend of mine is being laid to rest in Kilcommon graveyard, a true mountain man. Gerry Byrns was a beacon of light to me when I was a young lad of 19. I started working underground in the Silvermines as a miner and Gerry took me under his wing as an advisor and friend. He showed me the ropes and how to make a few quid extra. We were on the same shift until the mine closed in 1982. Having no father influence at home Gerry was a Godsend especially when my wedding day came around in 1980. He helped me write my Groom speech and we practiced it together in the stopes of Level 2. On my wedding day I opened an envelope he had sent to me with £100 inside. This was a lot of money then and I was glad to get it. The speech went great all thanks to Gerry. He was a strong man and always advised on good food and exercise. He was a great guitarist and introduced me to American country music and often sang. He had his own beautiful family which I met on a few occasions he loved them so much and spoke so proudly of them. I'm sorry not to be able to attend today but if any soul deserves comfort and the sight of God, it is you Gerry Byrns, thank you for being there for me and may you rest in peace, it was a delight to know your family were around you when you left this earth.
