Gerry passed my door on Weston Park on his way to 10 oclock Mass for years . He always smiled and greeted me . Bless his gentle soul.

So sorry to hear the sad news. Thinking of you all at this time especially Kirsten.

As a fellow parishioner of Good Shepherd parish, I knew Gerry Somers well to see, but sadly not really to chat with other than to say hello, an omission probably more my fault than his.

I imagine that chats with Gerry would have been enriching, if I had blinked first and let myself be drawn into conversation with him. How foolish we can be to deny ourselves the friendship and wisdom of others, a price we pay that, in situations such as this, can’t be reversed.

At Mass, in the Good Shepherd Church, Gerry, an unobtrusive pillar of the parish, exhibited a gentle and reassuring presence. He was content to help with the collections and to let Valerie go about her more visible voluntary work, whether in the sanctuary during Mass or in the parish shop afterwards.

Gerry was among a cohort of solid, elderly men from Good Shepherd Parish, who’ve sadly died in very recent years, deserving to be remembered fondly and with gratitude. Such men, raised in a very different Ireland, are not easily replaced, whether they were active in parish ministries or simply present at services and prayerfully supportive.
