To Angelo & Cenzo. My sympathies on the passing of your dear Dad. Take consolation that he is reunited with your dear Mum again. Your parents were renowned Park St. traders and have left a major imprint on the street and in the town. I remember your father behind the counter with a wise smile during the many visits to your home back in the 70's & 80's. Ripose in pace.

Joe and his wife were an integral part of Dundalk life for generations . Joe had a lovely welcoming smile, it was always a huge treat to get a take away or sit in in the Roma. Even though he lived in Ireland for a lifetime the restaurant had that magical Italian flair down to the Alfa Romeo parked outside . The food in the Roma was of a consistently high standard and was known far and wide. When family members came home from abroad a visit to the Roma was a must .

I'm very sorry to hear of Giuseppe's passing. What a lovely gentleman. I have really great happy memories going to the Roma. Our family always went from we were young, continuing on to when our Shelagh show group went each night after our performances in the Town Hall. Giuseppe always welcomed the whole team in, making us all feel very welcome. And even though it might have been late when we were leaving, he never complained. All our team had/have such happy memories of going. And in later years my family members continued to go and still do to the Roma. Giuseppe never changed in all those years. He continued to be a true gentleman with a lovely warm smile. Rest in Peace 🙏.

Deepest sympathy to the Grossi family such sad news my daughter in law is Italian and visited the Roma when she was in Ireland . Joe came out to speak to her in Italian as she was curious as to why Italians started fish and chips shop. He explained when he arrived in Dundalk no one wanted pizza or pasta that time.. He was very nice to come out and chat..May he rest in peace with his lovely wife

I was very sad to hear that Giuseppe died. May you Rest In Peace 🙏 Many many years ago when we were in the Shelagh Youth Musical Society, after our performance in the Town Hall we would all land into the Roma. Even though it was very often near to closing time Giuseppe and Bernardina would welcome all of us in. We were a lively bunch of young people and they treated us with such kindness. Thank you

Very upsetting news to hear about the loss of Joe. Bernie and Joe were the first management to hire me and give me all the experience and knowledge that has helped me so much over the years in my career path.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Joe.

A quiet man and a true gentleman, I’m sure Bernie has him working hard up there. It’s especially sad news at this time of year, but after the loss of his wife, it was clear how much he missed her.

I have fond memories of Joe, Bernie, and Chenso from my childhood in Dundalk, just like so many others. Later, I had the pleasure of delivering to them for many years with Tony Keenan’s. They always had time for a chat or a friendly hello.

The legacy they’ve left behind with their chip shop—still the best in the world—is truly something to be proud of.

Joe, may you rest in peace. My thoughts are with all the family and extended family at this difficult time.

A quiet man who arrived in Dundalk back in the ‘70’s, who with his beloved wife Bernadina started a business. That business became an empire. There isn’t a Dundalk person here or gone who didn’t know Mama Roma and her husband Papa Joe or the Roma Restaurant.
Joe was the consummate gentleman. A great husband Dad, Grandfather and Dundalk legend. He was also a lovely neighbour on our lane.
He will live long in the memory not only of his family but in the memory of the people of Dundalk, his home.

The last time I saw Joe "Mr Roma", was in the graveyard visiting his late wife's grave. We didn't know each other personally but I smiled and waved at him and felt his heartache.

He and his late wife exchanged a bag of chips for an early Democrat edition, (possibly the first edition) from my late father for many years. Dad would run across from the Democrat just before closing time at 1am on a Friday night/ Saturday morning. One precious bag of chips sustained him for the Friday night shift into the early hours of Saturday morning. Dad's mantra was always;
"The Roma chips are the best chips in town". No other take-away crossed the front door of our family home.

And the green plates, filled and enjoyed after many nights spent across the road in the Vinegarmans!
The end of an era for sure.

To his 2 sons, daughter in law, grand-daughter & extended family, your parents, through their hard work and endless hours of dedication to the family business have left their legacy in so many households in town and beyond.

I hope this brings some comfort to you all as you mourn the loss of your dear Dad.
Rest in peace with your dear wife and thank you both for the memories.

I have no words only a broken heart the Roma restaurant was the first place I started working from young age of 13 I was terrified but I was put at ease with Joe he showed me what to do and was work no standing about and from then it was like been part of a new family Angelo and Innocenzo were running around like wee boys do I remember one night when we the staff were left home after the evening sift I got out of his car outside my house and ended up at clump as it was then running with the car banging on the window were I was after catching my finger when Joe realised he couldn't be more sorry and brought me to my house where my mam bless her was waiting on her fish poor Joe was terrified to tell her what happened these are only some the memories I could go on and on you and Bernie were two of the best I worked for watch over your two beautiful boys Innocenzo and Angelo Lorraine and your beautiful grand daughter Valentina 💔 rest in paradise Papa and Mama Roma 💔

Dad, Grandad, Mr Roma, Giuseppe, or simply Joe - they all meant the same thing to so many in Dundalk - the gentle smile of a true Gentle Man.

He will be spoken of for many years to come in revered terms, as was his beloved wife Bernardina who also left this world far too soon - and we were honoured to have known them both.

Your family are admired and cherished by all of Dundalk and we are all deeply saddened at the passing of such an esteemed pillar of Park Street.
