Graeme Stewart Guthrie

I knew Graeme only through his letters in The Irish Times. Always a delight. He reached many beyond those who knew and loved him. My deepest condolences to all of you. Like many a reader, I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

Dear Daphne and family. We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Graeme, what a kind gentleman he was. You were both friends of our late parents Des & Marie and remember with fondness the many great years you all had in Railway. Graeme spoke such kind eloquent words at Des’s funeral for which we were very grateful. We are thinking of you all at this very difficult time. May Graeme Rest In Peace.

I had the pleasure of working with Graeme in JMO'B in the 1980s during a period of immense change in the baking industry. He was a very dedicated and focussed boss who made masterful strides in adapting to the new environment. A great sportsman, with a wry smile and a caring nature, he will be missed. I reestablished contact with Graeme last year after many, many years (we crossed paths in TCD bacteriology department in the 60s). We exchanged many reminisces especially about life in Johnston, Mooney and O'Brien where I grew up on the premises. I will miss his humour which was so well expressed in his letters to the editor to the Irish Times. He had the knack of getting editorial approval far more often than myself.
