Gráinne Dunne

Liebe Grainne,
wie unendlich traurig, dass Du viel zu früh gehen musstet. Jeder, der Dich kannte, hätte sich gewünscht, dass Du mindestens 100 Jahre alt wirst.
Dein wunderbar feines Klavierspiel, einfühlsames Begleiten und anregendes Unterrichten hat so viele Studenten beflügelt. Wir alle haben Dich vermisst, als Du zurück nach Irland gingst.
Fast noch mehr bin ich dankbar, dass ich Deine große Menschlichkeit, die interessanten und ehrlichen Gespräche mit Dir und Deinen herrlichen Humor genießen durfte.
Du musstest so viel Leid in Deinem Leben ertragen und bliebst trotzdem immer fröhlich, stark und zuversichtlich bis ans Ende. Ich bewundere Dich dafür sehr.
Wenn ich in die Wolken schaue, sehe ich Dich jetzt dort oben den Chor der Engel begleiten, lächelnd, befreit von allem irdischen Schmerz.
Danke, dass Du so warst, wie Du warst, Du hast sehr viele Menschen damit glücklich gemacht.
In meinen Gedanken wirst Du immer lebendig bleiben.
Mein herzliches Beileid an die ganze Familie, von der Grainne immer mit größter Liebe gesprochen hat und deren Unterstützung für sie so unglaublich wichtig war.

Sincere belated condolences to the Dunne family on Grá's passing. We've only just heard the sad news. Our parents were good pals years ago and growing up the Dunne siblings were always held up to us as shining examples of scholarship and talent - but we still liked them! Grá was obviously immensely talented but also very importantly a kind and thoughtful person generous with her time. She was very kind to our Mum recently despite her own ill-health. She should have had many more years of life ahead of her but sadly it didn't happen. Again deepest condolences to you all.

Du hast so tapfer gekämpft, so viele Jahre - und immer wieder gab es neue Perspektiven. Es war traurig für uns in Hannover, daß Du zurückgegangen bist nach Dublin. Aber bestimmt war es für Dich das Beste. Du konntest den schweren Weg gehen in Deiner Heimat und mit Deiner Familie.

What a sad answer I received in the morning of the 4th. Although Gráinne had phoned me with very alarming news in May, she was still hopeful to get stronger again and face a new treatment… From the first moment I met Gráinne at the Darmstadt summer course in 1997, she has become a very dear friend to me. I had the privilege of seeing her more often when I studied in Berlin but also the years after each moment we shared, short as they were, in letters, live or at the phone were cherished moments for me. She was such an extremely interesting person, full of curiosity in human nature, witty, so deeply involved in piano and singing, two domains we shared. I still hear her joyful melodious voice when we were chatting and she could laugh with such good humor. Alas, dear Gráinne, all this has now moved to the world of memories. In the calls I received in the last year she repeatedly told me how deeply happy and thankful she was with her family surrounding her and I want to thank you all for being there for Gráinne. Also the service I watched afterwards was a well merited tribute to her. Gráinne will stay deep in my heart for ever; it was an honour to have known her and it is a loss for the world.

My condolences to family and friends of Grainne Dunne, who passed away much to soon. I have known her as a warm colleague in Hamburg.

It was with great sadness that we learned that Grainne had passed away. She was a wonderful person, full of musicality, humour, and love of humanity. We especially send our condolences to Caitriona and Rudolphe, who were great family members and supporters of Grainne's career and talent. What she gave to us all will never be lost or forgotten.

My sincere condolences to Gráinne’s family on their great loss. Gráinne’s funeral mass was a fitting tribute to her wonderful musical talent and her delightful and warm personality. Those who worked with her and all her many students will miss her very much. Those of us who knew her as a very dear friend will be heartbroken.

My deepest condolences to all of Gràinne's family. I was fortunate to have had Gràinne's great guidance in my student days @RIAM when she used to come from Germany as a visiting lieder specialist at the time. She was generous in spirit, always kind in words and full of warmth in her teaching, it was a great privilege at that time to experience such expertise and musicality from one of the best. A greater privilege is that Gràinne always stayed in touch over the years and getting to know her was a great joy. She had such flare, charisma a cheeky grin when she understood what you telling her before you even managed to get to the end of the sentence, but most of all she was full of love and light and to be in her presence was a gift. A true lady ❤️ Gone too soon but will live on through the music we share and in our hearts always, may her beautiful soul now rest in peace 🙏

So sad to hear of Gra's passing, a great person and a wonderful cousin, remember visiting her in Berlin and Hannover (many years ago..) and listening to some of her amazing piano recitals while at the Hochschule, and remember seeing her so many times with all my cousins at 'Dunoon'

Strong memories of an exuberant smiling talented musician who had the support of a loving family. No surprise that she went on to such a successful career. Our deepest sympathies for your loss. We have been knowing Grainne for decades as a remarkably wonderful human being with extraordinary qualities. Among those: a rare ability to truly connect with people, a charming sense of humour, real care about others. I am deeply sorry to hear of Gráinne's passing, my sincere condolences to the family. I had the privilege to collaborate closely with Gráinne on several performances at the RIAM, and these experiences making music with her truly felt special. A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Gráinne at C&R's in Paris. We chatted away and 'reinvented the world' for a good part of the evening. She then sat at the piano and got the whole party sing loud and clear Happy Birthday to Caitriona. It is a joyful memory of Gráinne I cherish.

My earliest memories go back to Beethoven masterclasses in UCD - when Grainne was in her school uniform! My most recent - at the Feis in March 2023, where she was accompanying young singer(s). How lucky they were!
