Sincere sympathy to all the Scully family on the death of Helen. Her husband, John, was a valued friend and colleague at UCC, and I regarded it as a great honour when Helen gave me his treasured jazz CDs following his death.
I'm very saddened to hear of Helen Scully's passing. I'd like to share a memory of Helen and of her husband John. When I was very small, I decided it would be a fine idea if I took my big brother's bicycle and went freewheeling down the hill outside ours and the Scullys' houses. My feet didn't even reach the pedals.
Predictably, the inevitable oncoming car caused me to fumble for the brakes and of course I pressed the front brake first, and went head over heels over the handlebars and onto the road.
The oncoming car contained Helen and John Scully, who gently picked me up and took me to their home, where they rubbed Dettol into my cuts and bruises, dried my tears and fed me milk and biscuits until I calmed down somewhat. Then they called my mother and took me (and my brother's bike) home to face the music. I've often thought about this little act of kindness over the many years that have passed since then.
My deepest condolences to Greg, Jennifer, Fiona, Sandra and Melissa and to their families, and in particular to Helen's granddaughter Emily who is also my goddaughter.
