Sincere condolences to Brian and all the family. Amazingly kind and generous, was always in awe of his energy, commitment and passion. He was the reason many of us found our way to PW. RIP
Very sad to hear of Bertie's passing. Many very enjoyable hours spent in his company - with the odd pint or two of course. A great man, sorely missed by all who knew him.
Our sincere sympathies to all of Bertie's family on his passing. A great and memorable life ended for one of life's true gentlemen. Many KH past pupils followed Bertie into the sports clubs he loved so dearly - in particular Pembroke Hockey Club - where he welcomed, supported, cajoled and entertained them over many years and where they equally appreciated his support and friedship for them and their club. Gone but never forgotten. RIP Bertie.

Not many will be remembered as the genuine friend and gentleman that Bertie was. Can't remember a time that he wasn't 'a legend in our midst'!
KH, Leinster CC and PWHC - always a welcoming smile (and, of course, a pint!). Sincere condolences to Brian and all the clan. An appropriate and moving celebration of Bertie's life in Harold's Cross on the 5th January. Rest easy Bertie.

Deepest sympathies to Brian and the Buttimer family on the passing of Bertie . He was wonderful company and when he decided to play with the 4ths in LCC was happy to give advice but only when asked. Great quiet humour, wonderful company and generous in every way.
My condolences to Brian and the Buttimer family on the sad passing of a Bertie. So many fond memories of spending time with my dad, Alan, and him in PWHC as a kid. Always kind, always smiling, always welcoming - a proper gent. May he rest in peace.
A few words could never capture the magnitude of the positive contribution Bertie made to sport, men's hockey in particular, and Pembroke Wanderers specifically. He was a tremendous pillar of the game for more than 60 years with us: playing and umpiring on the pitch, hosting in the clubhouse, and fundraising in the carpark, he was the living & breathing embodiment of the best of amateur sport, volunteering, and honest-to-goodness hospitality and conviviality.
God rest his merry soul.
God rest his merry soul.

We will not see the likes of him again
Even played GAA during the Ban under the name of Joe Lane
Hope there is Sport in Heaven

Dear Gill. Sending you our deepest condolences on the loss of your Dad. I am glad that you had a good Christmas together before his passing. I am sure you will treasure the memories. Thinking of you and extended family at this difficult time. Sorry that we couldn’t be with you in person. Kieron & Fiona.
My deepest sympathy to the Buttimer family on the passing of Bertie. He was the recruiter in chief for most of us KH boys that joined Pembroke over the years. I have very fond memories of Bertie who was a great servant of the club, an absolute gentleman and a true legend in hockey circles. May he rest in peace.
Condolences to Brian and the Buttimer family on the sad news of Bertie's passing. As a cricketer his utilisation of the bowl playing skills he learned in Cork was unique. Nearly as unique as his pint buying heroics in the after match festivities of that era. Sadly the smoke won't be going up the chimney as easily as it did in those halcyon days.
I was saddened to learn of Bertie’s Passing but pleased he had such a long innings; my sincere condolences to Brian and all the family. He was a lovely man and a true and most generous gentleman. Many a much appreciated pint was awaiting me when as a playing member of LCC and subsequently when I moved to Phoenix CC ; change of club didn’t matter to him !He was a legend and will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of meeting him. May He Rest In Peace 🏏
To all of Bertie’s Famiiy, relations, neighbours and friends but especially in Bertie’s Hockey and Cricket circles,
I was really saddened to learn of Bertie’s passing, what an absolute gentleman he was, an amazing advocate for Hockey, Cricket, friendship, kindness, respect and life in general he was.
I came to know him as Mr. Pembroke Wanderers and once you heard Bertie & hockey in the same sentence you could only be talking about Bertie Buttimer! He always had the warmest of welcomes for everyone who stepped into the Pembroke Clubhouse after nothing but a competitive, tough game in Serpentine. But no matter what, win, lose or draw, Bertie was there with the arm outstretched to have a word in the ear, gentle enquiry as to how past members were in your own club and if all was well in the family, more often than not a drink was called for and put in your hand whether you wanted it or not.
He was a special, special, down to earth, lovely man, no doubt greatly missed by his loving family but please take comfort and consolation in the gentleman he was and a life fully lived.
May his gentle, kind soul rest in peace.
Bertie will be missed, but never ever forgotten. 🏑🏑

Bertie’s generosity was legendary and as a student in Trinity in the late 70’s I was hosted in PWHC on many occasions. His continued support and loyalty to the club was unfailing.

I remember Bertie Buttimer as a kind senior boy when I entered KH in 1943. Bertie excelled at sport and played it cheerfully .He never forgot he was a Corkman. I looked up to him as a good friend and one I was proud to know. My sympathy to all the family.
Great memories of Bertie , as students in KH and at the last KH celebration ( with the late Jimmy Harris in St Patricks Cathedral : in KH he participated in all sports , famous as a cricket fielder for his accurate underarm returns !: played with him at PWHC in 50's to mid 60's: later he came with a PW team to Sligo (where hockey was revived by late Ken Blackmore in mid 70's). My deepest sympathy to all the family for loss of a great soul, having lived a long & fulfilled life 'now resting where no shadows fall, in perfect peace he awaits us all'

I will always be thankful for the encouragement shown by Berty. He has been a role model of decency and conduct both on and off the pitch. Rest in peace.
Sincere condolences to the family. Beautiful service. Just as he would have wanted. Many happy memories of Bertie driving me from one game to the next when doubling up. My brother, Richard played a season with Bertie back in 1979. Always a friend to students and visitors. A truly great sportsman, Thanks Bertie
Met Bertie first, opening the batting with my Dad, Andy Ryan in LCC. They only hit 4s or ran 1! Then had the pleasure of knowing him well in Pembroke HC. What a great sporting legend. I'm sure there is a great hockey and cricket team up there now. Deirdre
My sincere condolences to the Buttimer family. I like many were very fond of Bertie. I always loved to hear stories of the days when he played hockey, and of course Bertie was never shy to tell you how you played. A great man and sporting legend. RIP Bertie.
My condolences to Brian and the Buttimer family on your loss.
I have great memories of encounters with Bertie in both Anglesea Road and Rathmines over the years. He was a great sportsman, competitive on the pitch and gracious off the pitch - truly a gentleman - RIP Bertie

So fortunate to have opened the batting with Bertie for 2 seasons in 1989 and 1990 . Despite the 48 year age gap he was a great friend, and a massive influence on my love of the game. R.I.P to a true great.
I was so sad to read this sad news.

So sorry to read that Bertie had died - Sincere condolences to the Buttimer family.
His contribution to under age Hockey and Cricket in PWHC and LCC was immense. He introduced my 4 children to Cricket over a few summers and my 3 boys were drip fed into the Hockey teams over the winters. He even inveigled me into Vets Hockey in 1993 after numerous pints over many months. His hospitality was legendary.
Bertie we all loved you - Marcus, Mary, Marcus Jnr, Shane, Jane and Simon.
You had a superb innings. May you now rest in peace.

So sorry to read of the death of your father, Bertie. I doubt if anybody played cricket in LCC who were not greeted with friendship and a drink. Bertie was a great ambassador of LCC and for cricket throughout the country. A wonderful sport win or lose and a credit to cricket. He will be sadly missed. May Bertie now Rest in Peace.
