Mary, very sorry to hear of the death of your husband Harry. Sincere condolences to you and your family.
Dear Mary, Peter, and Emma.
News of Harry's passing reached me via a mutual friend. I am profoundly sad to learn of it. I had the great good fortune to become involved in the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE), representing the US Centers for Disease Control, while Harry was President of the Union. I am not sure I was younger but I was definitely junior in international affairs. He generously taught me the ropes and we became good friends in the bargain. One connection was that we both loved literature; Harry knew a great deal about both fiction and poetry, and he himself was a gifted writer and speaker--such clarity and style! He got the better of me in that, and - what pleased him more, I suspect - in golf. We managed to play some grand courses together, even once walking the course as spectators at the Masters in Augusta, Georgia. I think to myself now--40 years of friendship. I have only a few college friends I have known longer than this fine man whom I will miss all my remaining days. Yeats said it best of course:
Think where man’s glory most begins and ends
And say my glory was I had such friends.
Dear Mary,
So sad to hear of Harry’s passing.
We were in medical school together
May he rest in peace.
