Our friendship spans over many decades, when I first invited Hilary to teach German to our senior pupils in Barefield N.S. I have such lovely memories of Hilary arriving to school on her bike. She was always so pleasant to every pupil with her bright, endearing smile. She instilled a love of foreign languages in all our pupils. Hilary’s excellent linguistic influence was not alone in Primary Education but also extended to Second Level as she taught and prepared so many secondary school pupils for their state examinations in both French and German. She took great joy in showing me her extensive wild flower garden. She loved nature, especially feeding the wild birds and her pet cats. I'm very sad to hear of Hilary's passing. I have lovely memories of her teaching German to my fifth class pupils when I taught at Barefield NS many years ago. I was privileged to have seen her working with the senior children in Corofin NS over many years and her incredible talents as a linguist were an absolute joy to behold. She certainly inspired a great love of language and the culture that surrounded European languages amongst her many pupils and she will be greatly missed .
