Hugh Brendan McCann

Sincerest condolences to the McCann family on Brendan's passing. Fond memories of him as the principal of Loreto, where he always encouraged kindness and creativity among the students. A man of many interests and talents, Brendan will be remembered by all who had the privilege to meet him. May he rest in peace.

We dearly miss our Uncle Brendan, but he passed away in a blessed way, peacefully and surrounded by his family.

We spent many summers at his and Aunty Brenda’s home in Belturbet. He was truly a pillar of the community, not just by profession a great teacher but by calling one who spread love and knowledge wherever he went.

I have children of my own now, and instinctively I do the same thing as Brendan, a small gesture of grabbing the cheek of them and sharing my joy at how wonderful they are. As he grabbed you Brendan would say, “This is my pal, a great fella!” That’s what he shared - joy, enthusiasm, wisdom, divine gifts. He would rename us kids after great figures who have given something to humanity, like I would be “Patrice Lamumba”, the first democratically elected leader of the Congo.

That was Brendan’s vision, light and humorous, universal and wise. And that is his place, at peace in the company of great souls.

Sincere condolences Brendan's wife and family. He was a great teacher, a thought-provoking man who encouraged his students to think big and deep. Brendan was not a man you would forget in a hurry, nor would you want to. Himself and Aiden Harte were a pair of legends. May he rest in peace 🙏

My deepest condolences to Cormac, ur mum and extended family on the very sad passing of your dear dad. Mr. McCann was a gentleman and a great teacher, even though he got us in trouble many times. He would come into our classroom, which was the large study, back in the days of boarders, lift the lid of the teacher's desk and let it bang down, just to make sure we were all awake. This broke the desk a few times, which we got blamed for. Years on when I told him that story, of course we had a great laugh. He never forgot faces and always stood for a wee chat whenever and wherever we met. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time. May you rest in eternal peace Mr. McCann.

Deepest sympathy to Brenda and family and extended family and friends on the death of your dearly loved Brendan. His passing has left a huge void in the lives of many many people not only in Ireland but in many parts of the world. He was an inspirational and caring man, a true educator who influenced so many girls in his role as teacher and Principal in Loreto, Cavan.
I served on the Board of Management for six years in Loreto, Cavan.
Brendan was hardworking, dedicated to his staff and pupils and interested in the advancement of all aspects of the life of Loreto, Cavan. He was an inspiration to all of us on the Board. Because I was away on holidays I couldn't attend his funeral and for that I am so sorry.
May you treasure all the wonderful memories you have of Brendan and may he rest in peace and rise in glory.

I have very fond memories of working with him on recalling local history especially his father’s involvement in the rescue of the body of Sean McIntyre in 1921. He was a very inspirational and knowledgeable man. My thoughts are with you all at this very sad and difficult time. When people, at least in Ireland, mention in reference to someone "He was a gentleman and scholar," they generally mean that person is of good character. However, in the case of Brendan McCann, those words never rang more true!

Often, when I was at the McCanns' for tea and biscuits with Cormac and our friends, discussing everything and anything at the kitchen table, Brendan would recite poetry or give some lesson about English prose or literature. He was so dedicated to his profession, to his love of reading, English, and teaching. He was a true character, and I always enjoyed my interactions with Brendan and will miss him.
