Dear Sharon and Donoghue family,
I was so sorry to hear of Hugh's passing. He occupied a place of enormous affection in my heart, informed by so many childhood memories. He was a frequent and very welcome visitor to my parents' different Wicklow homes all though my youth and he was unfailingly warm, gentle, engaging, interesting and interested. And he was also brilliant. I marvelled at his artistic talent and was thrilled with the beautiful cards and pictures he used to present us with. A great laugher and smiler, his calm patience made him completely approachable, which was the case with only a select few adults. I regret not having the opportunity to see him in recent years but I received welcome updates from other family members.
May he rest in peace wherever he is, I will only ever remember him with unconditional regard.
My deepest sympathies,
Dara x

A gang of us was together in Wicklow over the weekend and spent a lot of time talking about Hugh and how and when we knew him. One of us knew him when he was part of her school days gang in Blackrock, several of us from the Wicklow hippy days, others when he was doing the wonderful original art work for the Bray Bookshop and another of us had a date with him in the old Barnardo’s restaurant in Lincoln Place. We all agreed that he was a really great guy. With deepest sympathy at this sad time

I have many fond-and vivid- memories of working with Hugh in Arks in the late 70's. A warm, spirited man with a puckish sense of humour, and always a pleasure to run into in later years. Condolences to Sharon and his family.
