RIP Hugh

My sincerest condolences to Mary, Marysia and the rest of his family. Hugh was a big man in more ways than one. One blessed with great strength and character who lived life to the full. Who on occasion could be stubborn and cantankerous! One who was not afraid of taking risks. Driving through the railway arch at Raynes Park on a red light is an abiding memory. When at school he cycled to Hull in a day, then on to Fraserburgh in Scotland, followed by a day out on a fishing trawler. Not something, I believe, any teenager would undertake today. He was like a brother to me. Hugh and Mary gave me a room in their home when I had none, for which I shall be ever grateful. I know his family meant everything to him, from his late mother and father and through the ages to his grandchildren. I shall miss him greatly.

Hugh and I shared the rite of passage from boys to men. We were shaped by similar interests,
influences and aspirations. In that time we enjoyed a closeness. Though life steered us apart, a strong bond remained. Our friendship still lives with me and will always stay with me as a treasured memory.

As his younger sister by 3 yrs, l was the bane of Hugh’s existence. I would get him into so much trouble as he would always protect me, and l knew that. Even though we fought like cat and dog,he was still there to protect me even as an adult on a few occasions.
I moved to Canada when l was 19 and ended up marrying a Canadian. Hugh introduced my husband, David to golf, which in turn made me a golf widow. I’m now a real widow, and Hugh was one of the first to call when David died.
He’ll always be my big brother. The phrase that comes to mind when l think of him (as it was written everywhere- Is “Hugh iz Handsome”
( that’s how he wrote it).

Sincerest condolences to Hugh's family on his passing. He was a true friend of ours for over twenty years and we had some wonderful times over those years when celebrating birthdays and other family occasions. He was a talented tradesman and did exceptional work in our home.
Rugby was his passion and many hours were spent arguing after the televised games, watched mainly in local bars. A Scottish win would light up his day and a verse of "Flower of Scotland" might follow. Happy days indeed and many memories to cherish.
