I was dismayed and saddened to hear of Hugh's recent sad passing. I was a classmate in Ballyfin from 1963 to 1968. It was when I was trying to contact Hugh for our class reunion (50th) that I became aware of the sad news. We shared the same classroom during our time in Ballyfin and were teammates on the college Gaelic football team. We shared an interest in horse racing, although I'm afraid I didn't have his knowledge and insight into matters equine. While speaking to another former classmate last week he recalled an occasion from 1968 when we were watching the Grand National in the Leaving Cert classroom. At the end of the race, Hugh pulled down an inner blackboard which had been covered by an outer one( on a separate running track ). Written in block capitals were four words- RED ALLIGATOR - BOSS HORSE. Needless to say Red Alligator had won the National as per Hugh's prediction. My sincere sympathy to all of you on your sad loss. We will remember Hugh at our reunion.
