5. I think it very appropriate, as suggested by my very good friend and unpaid proof-reader Pat, to finish with the Irish Blessing:
May the roads rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again –
May God hold you
In the hollow of His hand.
4. A second subject which Jackie taught and organised was music. He was already proficient in playing many instruments and started many of us learning to play the descant recorder. Initial results were variable! I had an attempt on the fiddle and soon realised it was harder than it looked but must admit my practice lacked dedication. As the old saying goes, you can take a horse to water……
Anyone who witnessed Jackie learning to play the guitar could not fail to be impressed. He put the necessary time into his regular practice, using up whatever spare moments he could. Music was, as they say, in his bones! He loved getting choral groups and choirs going. His commitment extended from the classroom to the various parishes that were fortunate to attract his energy. He enriched the liturgy in each of these and continued this important apostolate in ‘retirement’, in the parish of Mullaghbawn.
In many ways Jackie showed great dedication to whatever he turned his hand. This could include diy, fishing, working with his beloved wife Rosemarie and their children. He was always generous with his time. He was a lovely man and we will all miss him very much. May he rest in Peace!
3. Our real work in St Cassians started soon after our arrival. We noticed straight away the important role which Jackie played in the running of the school. New laboratories had just been built for the teaching of Physics and Chemistry. Jackie taught all the chemistry lessons. He was an excellent teacher, extremely well organised. And you could tell that he loved teaching. We were obviously intrigued by many of the pieces on display. One in particular was a still, intended for producing plentiful supplies of distilled water. In one lesson when we were discussing another use for it we learned that it could be used to make alcohol!
Jackie told us that for that very reason the school had to have a license to protect it against misuse! And that, without warning, someone from the local authority could call to test the still for traces of alcohol! You could not have guessed it, because later that lesson a van pulled up outside the laboratory and asked to see the still! When he left we were all relieved, especially Jackie!
I liked the study of chemistry and ended up taking it as one of my subjects at ‘A’ Level, following it also as a choice for Teacher Training. Thanks to Jackie!
2. The ferry passage to Liverpool was an exciting adventure for us! Above deck it was possible to hear the sound of cattle from below but we were used to such sounds around home and passed no remarks. Little did we know at the time, that in years to come those cattle would be replaced by lorries and cars on Irish Ferries route! No, we were more interested in the range of crisps on sale. Our friends from Crossmaglen knew the form, and showed us country boys how to sprinkle the little packets of salt onto the new Tato crisps.

Next day, after a long train journey through England we were on smaller trains from Paddington to Newbury and then on to the small town of Kintbury. It was to become our home but the surrounding country bore no resemblance to South Armagh. This was country with massive fields, where people owned and trained race horses. So it came as a shock when we had to get out of our comfortable train and walk for two miles on country roads to St Cassians College! That was in the very warm summer of 1959!
A tribute to my first cousin and good friend Jackie Campbell
1. Good morning everyone. Like you I was devastated on Friday to hear the very sad news that we had lost a great friend and a very special person. May Jackie be taken into the hands of God where he can rest in peace. My sincere condolences to Jackie’s wife Rosemarie, to his children Kieran, Siobhan, Rosemarie and Thomas and to his six grandchildren. I’ve had the great fortune to have lived not far from Reading where Jackie and Rosemarie raised their family and was always given a warm welcome when I was able to visit. It was a gift to witness the children grow up in a very loving home. In turn, it was my special pleasure in later years to welcome them to my home in Wales as they made their way to Holyhead and the long journey home to South Armagh.
Back in 1947, Jackie and his brother Pat responded to a call by the De La Salle Brothers to consider their vocation. They went to one of the De La Salle schools in Berkshire, England. Each year, in the summer they came back home as their studies progressed and of course we were all delighted to see them. By the late 1950s I was one of seven youngsters from South Armagh who followed their example as a result of a visit by a recruiter, Brother Fabian. So, in September 1959 when Jackie and Pat were returning from their holidays in South Armagh, they had a party of seven to accompany them from Belfast to Liverpool and further on. It was not their most stress-free journey!

Not always the best with words so I’ll go for a hymn which I always found uplifting and am sure Mr Campbell played many times .

Bear you on the breath of dawn
