What can I say about Hugh that has not been said here already? He was just a fantastic person, a gentleman and stalwart of the community who did everything he put his hands to with a full heart and smile on his face. Never short of a joke on the Friday vegetable round on our road and more importantly, never told my Mam when he caught me smoking!! We all spend so much of our childhood in the playroom in Number 96 and despite the regular carnage, he never gave out to any of us!! A huge loss to the community and our thoughts and prayers are with you Margaret, Gwen, Hughie, Jimmy and Nigel.

Very sad to hear of Hugh's passing. A lovely man, always made sure my ball was quickly thrown back over the back wall. I can still picture the spread of fruit and veg in the van.

I’m very sorry to hear of Hughie’s passing. I have very fond memories of Hughie’s fruit & veg van making its way up our road in Elton Court, and all the kids clustering around the back of it to see what was on offer. He’d often make sure we’d get a mandarin or banana on the house. Such lovely memories of him. Sincere condolences to all his friends and family. May Hughie rest in peace.
