May your gentle soul Rest In Peace
I am writing this as I spent two years, at the same dissection table as Mr. Browne’s daughter Amanda in 1989 with whom I remain a “friend” on Facebook “from Sunny Sheffield”. I first met Mr. Browne when I was welcomed into his home on the wet Sunday evening of the World Cup Final in 1990. Here, Mr. Browne having taken control of their huge pet dog, talked of his wish to be more knowledgeable of the game of Cricket. He described how and which intricacies of the game interested him. I came away having learned more about the nuances of the game than when I had entered his home.
When Mr. Browne was RCSI Dean my academic path took a self-inflected, perilous turn. Openly, in meetings, he was compassionate, empathetic, and measured with me. Privately he was firm and spoke a few home truths to me, but always in his inimitable kind, soft and soothing voice. Thereafter when we would see each other we would subtly mutually raise a glass to each other, he’d exchange an approving look of eye contact with a slight chink of his neck. I remember Mr. Brown for reaching out to me when I had fallen, supporting me to stand back up whilst giving me a good dusting down, and then always encouraging me as I moved forwards and onwards. In my life, Mr. Browne was kind to me when it counted, that is how I remember him today and always.

My dear Olive,
We were saddened to hear of Hy's death. We had many good times together dating back to our first meeting in Birmingham in 1968. Since then we met often and he was a wonderful colleague in RCSI. He once turned his surgical skill with success to treating our wolfhound! Olive, memories will endure and help to ease the pain of loss with time. Please give our sympathy also to all the family.
With fond memories.

I was very saddened indeed to read the notice of Hy’s death in today’s Irish Times.
I first met him many years ago when he was a gifted surgeon in the Richmond Hospital and then much later in the 1990s when Suzanne and I worked together. As we pass through life a small number of people we meet stand out in our memories. Hy, for me, was certainly one of these. By all accounts many of his patients, pupils he mentored, and so many others, he changed their lives for the better.
To Olive, Michael, Derek, Amanda, Suzanne, Geraldine, his beloved grandchildren and extended families, I send my sincere condolences on your great loss,

We the RCSI medical graduates of 1976 would like to express our sincerest condolences to Olive, Michael, Derek and Amanda and all the family. When we heard of Hy’s sad passing
we thought it appropriate to let Hy’s family know how we appreciated what a wonderful surgeon, clinician, educator, mentor and friend he was to so many of us. In the days of less available and sophisticated imaging and laboratory tests Hy gave us a wonderful grounding in clinical skills. In addition to his excellent surgical ability and wonderful care to his patients he also taught us how to be kind, compassionate and empathic to those we have cared for in our various medical practices all over the world.
Hy traveled overseas on many occasions to teach and examine postgraduate doctors for the RCSI and was highly respected by very many surgeons in Africa and the Middle East. This was recognised by numerous prestigious awards presented to him down the years.
May Hy rest in peace after a lifetime of caring for others and showing us, by his example, to do the same. Mary Leader Class of 1976 RCSI

I assisted Hy in surgery in Blamchardstown im 1975. We met again in Newcastle Hospital many years later when he toured Newcastle Hospital for the Medical Council and he took away an old instrument which he later had identified as one used in the old TB days. It is now in the RCSI museum. He was very easy to bet on with and was a renowned teacher. My condolences to his family. Brian OShea, psychiatrist Co Wicklow
