Dear Deirdre Pat, Justin and all of the McCarthy Family, our sincere sympathy on the passing of your dear mother, Irene. We have fond memories of her in the O’Connell household. She was forever in Seán’s conversations on his visits home to us in Hardwick St. My mother tried to live up to Mrs McCarthy’s high baking standards, much to Seán’s delight! Cillian also loved to talk about his granny on these visits and had great stories about your mother’s efforts to look after the dog and give him medication! I also remember meeting her many times in Cnoc an Dúin where we would have a chat over a cup of tea. We also remember Seán today and the joy, friendship and education he brought to two generations of this family. Irene will now be reunited with Seán and Ciarán and your father, Paddy, which we know will be of some consolation to you all. It was lovely to be able to join you today for the Mass and pray with you all. Deirdre, you did your mother proud in your moving and heart-felt reflection about her. You captured her spirit so well as a devoted mother and friend. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dilís.
