Our deepest condolences to Nora, Theresa and all the Daughton and Griffin families on your great loss.

I would like to pay tribute to Jack.

He was one of the gentlest, kindest, most selfless people I have known.
He took such good care of our neighbour, Moss Joe Murphy, RIP.
He was a great friend of my father, Mikie Carrig and visited him regularly until he died, aged 92. He always brought an apple tart and they would have tea and talk until midnight.
I’m sure we were some of many who enjoyed his mother, Maggie’s hospitality and sweet cake when cutting turf in Ballyegan.
I only wish Jack could have lived longer to enjoy his retirement more and his adored nieces and nephews and their children.
Jack did so many things for everyone but always in his own quiet way, never looking for thanks or recognition.
He is a huge loss to Ballyegan and all of Ballydonoghue.

Great memories of commotion in Ballyegan as young and old got together after milking to cart-train a show jumper. A community could have been mourning then as the poor colt struggled to transition from jumping and now rearing, to pulling a cart; with Jack as ever brave, sat up front on the reins. Along with Tom Barry, Moss Murphy & co, fellow princes of the ‘one horse power era’, nobody was ever let down.

He caught me out nicely of a dull morning when there was hay down - me totting up groceries had him bear his soul of the injustice of ‘those who made a living out of a yard of a counter.’ You could have cut the atmosphere with a scissors as he left to take on the weather, and where he fared well enough to be able to boast that he never failed a milk test. And so the size of counters and fields pales into insignificance when compared to the biggest heart.

I have a further fond memory of moving house in a foreign land and the same Ballyegan meithael pulls up outside in a truck – hands still firmly on the reins, now looking after the neighbours child!

Condolences to Mike and Nora and the extended family – he was a Saint if every there was one.

RIP Jack - heart and soul of all that was good about Ballyegan, and beyond.

Our parish has lost a wonderful community man. Jack's life was a life of service to Ballydonoghue Parish, in many ways, never seeking the limelight. He was a man of great faith. He was close to nature, be it on the farm or on the bog. His life on earth was spent doing good. May he, this day, be numbered among the saints. Jack will be remembered and he will be greatly missed.
