Sincere sympathies to all of Jim's family,immediate and extended on his sudden passing. What an intelligent,witty,and knowledgeable man he was on so many topics.,and a pleasure to be in his company. Rest easy ,jim,you're labours are over.Ar dheis de go raibh a hanam dilis.

I was saddened to learn of Jim’s death after a long illness. Its hard sometimes to remember someone as they were in earlier life and in full fitness, but I will try and do just that.

Jim had the strong educational background of a Chemical Engineer combined with an intuitive understanding of how things worked, what might be going on and then how various ideas could be tested. He was a great problem solver.

I first knew Jim when he joined the team tasked with getting our company’s latest and greatest computer-controlled PVC manufacturing plant at Hillhouse works near Blackpool to work properly. I was a fresh graduate engineer and Jim my rather more experienced boss. What a time we had! We prioritised the biggest problems causing intermittent production and set to work. Some of the ideas we had, met with opposition from our more conservative colleagues, but we persevered and systematically dismantled the nay sayers arguments, secured the necessary funding and proceeded to carry out a series of innovative projects that transformed the operation. Jim taught me that there were plenty of people who would carefully explain why something wouldn’t work and only a few who would have the courage to try a new approach.

A great life lesson for me.
