A kind soul and a good friend, he will be forever missed and never forgotten

Jake, if I'm honest, it wasn't even like I knew you that well; but I think, in the more essential sense, like I did have a good sense of who you were (or is that are? One's mind rejects the idea that you really are gone)... Certainly I felt like we were friends, because that's how you made ME feel. You were the kind of man who 'let people in'; your kindly and genuine nature just somehow radiated from you. I know I'm far from alone in noting that you always had time and a friendly word for everyone, and so you did for me. It is to my immense regret that I didn't always give you the time I should have, and if I didn't, it was only because I was always tearing for a bus, or late for an appointment or 'some such'... I didn't have the pleasure (and honour) of knowing you 'back in the day', but as well as being neighbours these last number of years, we were of a similar age. While you were, in truth, young, and certainly young at heart, you were definitely, at the same time, of "The Ould Stock". You knew that this life could be a "Vale of Tears", you suffered the "slings and arrows", but you had the fortitude to 'push through' and endure, and as they say in this neck of the woods, "Keep the Shiny Side Out" - always! To be taken, after everything, so suddenly - it shocked us all! We can only hope there's some plan, but it doesn't make it easier to take. I can't begin to think what it's like for your family, to whom I offer my most solemn condolences.

We are devastated to hear you’re no longer with us. You were an absolute diamond mate. Will never forget our last times together, 3 of us catching up & having the craic round your kitchen table. So glad to have these memories with you. You were way too good for this place, the kindest soul, the sweetest man. Still can’t believe you’re gone… Totally devastated. It was with deep shock and profound sorrow that I heard the terrible news of Jamesy's passing. Fifty-three is far too young, and to be taken in such a cruel manner is truly difficult to comprehend.
Love and sympathies to Andy, Willie and all of his family and friends.

Jamesy was more than an acquaintance; he was a fixture of our childhood on Foxdene Drive, eight years our senior, and always watching over us. I'll never forget him babysitting, letting us stay up late for MacGyver, then attempting to lull us asleep before the folks got back with his dramatic rendition of "Lady in Red." By Chris De Burgh. It was never quite a lullaby, more like X Factor disaster but still a cherished memory that brings a smile and a laugh.

He was the undisputed protector of our street in the eighties and early nineties- always with his hurling stick in one hand and sliotar in the other, shadowed by his magnificent Alsatian, Jason. He unfortunately faced more than his share of life's challenges, especially the heartbreakingly early loss of his lovely mam, Rita.

So many things will always remind me of him: the crack of a hurling stick, his youthful flat-top haircut, his love of cocoa even on a hot day!, and his passion for dance music from the Blue Banana Niteclub and Jake's Bar era.

Rest in peace, Jamesy.
