Sincere condolences Garry and all the Keevers family. Your Dad and Grandad was an absolute gentleman. I have fond memories of lovely chats with him in the shop. I especially remember one Christmas Eve (2009) when he was encouraging me very much, to leave work early because of snow, to get home safely to Macroom for Christmas. Colleagues told me later that he called over to the shop after I left to make sure I was gone!

I first encountered Mr. Keevers (I still cannot bring myself to call him Jim) in early September 1958 in the newly-opened Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh based in the Boys' Club in Bantry where he was one of only two teachers at first, the other being the school principal, Fr. Leader, to whom I am also greatly indebted. Both were then young men, not yet thirty years of age.
Mr. Keevers was of strikingly handsome appearance, seeming to me to bear a close resemblance to Jeff Chandler, a film star I regularly encountered in the Stella Cinema in the town square. He was also a most erudite and open-minded man to whom no subject or concept seemed alien. His history classes in particular could be something of a magical mystery tour as, usually speaking without notes, he ranged far and wide, not always adhering strictly to the topic. He would have had little liking for the restrictive grind of the points' system that came much later. I have always thought of him as a true university man, with the caveat that I have encountered very few of his kind in my university career. He was simply an inspiration.

Our deepest sympathy to all Jim's family on his departure from this life. Jim taught me( Seán ) in a school which never had its own building, back in the nineteen sixties. I learned there that the building in which a school is housed has nothing at all to do with the quality of the education it offers. This depends completely on the quality of the teachers who provide this education. We did not lack for good and dedicated teachers but I think all would agree that Jim Keevers stood head and shoulders above all of his contemporaries for the breadth of his knowledge, the incisiveness of his intellect and for his ability to make the most abstruse matters simple, with no teaching aid apart from his box of chalk. He did not rely on text books very much, apart from correcting them from time to time. He imbued me with a love of learning which, thankfully, still remains. Thank you, Jim and may your beloved Ardmore soil rest lightly upon you. Ar dheis Dè go raibh tú.
