Bro. McCaffrey (as we knew him) was a very enthusiastic teacher and a real showman as he demonstrated some phenomenon to the class and showed how the scientists of the time made the same observation and developed a theory to explain it. He always said that what the world needed were people of integrity...... I think "man of integrity" sums him up very well. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam!
I'm so glad to say that after 40 years,I recently took time to visit Jim at his home for the first meeting since LC to express a long overdue thanks for the input which he had in my life. He was an inspirational teacher and taught me to love maths. We all loved and respected him as was evident from the fact that you could hear a pin drop right through his classes. I remember that way back then, life was not straightforward for him but you would never see the effects in his classroom. Jim was the perfect teacher and gentleman and had a significant influence on my life...and I'm not saying that lightly. Sooo glad I met you a few months ago Jim.
My schooldays in St Josephs are filled with memories of a caring gentleman. May he rest in peace.
To Mary, Padraic & all of the McCaffrey family,
I was so sorry to hear of Jim's death. There are only a few people you meet in life that help paint the canvas of your future. Jim was one of them for me. It seems a long time ago but the encouragement and support he gave me to stick with honours maths when I was sure it was beyond me wasn't ever forgotten. It obviously gave Jim a kick as well because I didn't have to wait to collect my results, he came into Sweeney's where I was working for the summer at 10am to tell me I'd got my honour.
He was a gentleman and an inspiration and as kind a person as you could ever wish to meet. May he rest in peace.

Dear Jim, special friend, gifted teacher, you were an inspiration to all your students, especially to those with whom you shared your gift of music. I was so fortunate to be among them. I cherish the friendship we enjoyed, forever grateful that our paths crossed in life. May you enjoy peace and harmony among the choirs of angels.
Fairwell dear friend, may you rest in the peace & tranquility of our dear lord's home where we know he has a special place for you. After over 40 years of friendship, Jim, it is tough to say goodbye but we'll meet again & until that day we will keep the music playing. So sleep in peace dear Jim & thanks for the beautiful memories that we'll cherish always. Rest in peace dear friend. Love always Seamus & Margaret
