Jim was a through gentleman who I had the pleasure of known through my work in FDYS. His passion was Chess and Draughts,the games will live on through many of the young people who he coached. Jim was always available to Mark and myself, to do the County sports draws or referee County or National Chess/Draughts finals and we travelled to many of thoes. So sorry to hear of Jim’s passing, may he rest in peace. Deepest sympathy to all the family. I have fond memories of Jim when he had his shop on north Main Street, he always had time for a chat and was interested in how everyone was doing. He taught my daughter to play draughts and she enjoyed the many competitions involved.

As a child reared in Peters Square I knew Jim Somers all my life. He was the dictionary definition of gentleman. I remember him as a young man, his car, his impeccable courtesy, his love for his family and a deep unshakeable faith in his creator. When Fr Fritz asked me to man the gates of the Friary on a Saturday Jim and I had many lengthy chats. I send much love and support to his grieving family on his loss. Heaven gained a beautiful soul.
