Mary, Jim, John, Catherine and family. I was saddened to hear the passing of Jimmy. I only drove past the house last week for a quick trip down memory lane hoping I might spot a familiar face. I have so many fond memories working nearly 9 of my years on the Hoey's farm. In 1994 at 14 I had an afternoon trial run to see if I was capable of working on the dirt shoot of the potato harvester. When the work was done Jimmy came up to myself and my friend and offered us a job. A 7am start for £18 a day he said - how does that sound? Deal I said. I had some of the best days of my life working there and it truly made me humble. I would chat to Jimmy about many things but on one particular day, I came across an old cricket ball in the shed. I love cricket and Jimmy's eyes lit up when he saw it in my hand. If my memory is correct he told me he played, he gave me that cricket ball that day. I still have it. RIP Jimmy

Sincerest sympathies to Mary, Jim, John, Catherine and the family. I have very fond memories of Jimmy from a much simpler time, a time when you were more likely to see a tractor on the lane than a car. I became friends with Jim and John and Áine became friends with Catherine not long after we arrived in The Commons. Jimmy and Mary were always so welcoming and generous. Jimmy gave me my first summer job “working” on the potato harvester with the entire family one summer in the late seventies. I couldn’t believe it at lunchtime on that first Saturday, Jimmy handed me £7. I’ve never won the Lotto but I imagine that’s what it feels like. And Jimmy and Mary would bring me home from Gormanston on a Sunday when they were collecting Jim and we’d stop off at a shop in a housing estate near McLoughlin’s in Balbriggan. Jimmy would buy his tin of ready-rubbed but he’d also fork out for a bar of chocolate or an ice cream for all of us as well. It was a time when it was a real treat to get a bar of chocolate or a packet of Tayto once a week. I moved out of Lusk when I was 18 but Jimmy was always glad to see me any time I came home and I had a world of respect for him as a hard-working, gentle giant of a man. You’ve lost a great person and I can fully empathise with you all. He will be remembered.

Mary, I am very saddened to hear of Jimmy's death. He as you know, had a very special place in our family's hearts. Our memories of him go back to our childhood with the very strong Matthews connection. Your visits to our home were always anticipated with great expectation and joy. My father always felt the close link with Ballaghstown and the hinterland. Yvonne and I fondly remember our last visit to your home. May Johnny rest in peace.
