I have great memories of when we travelled to the Radio Ham Rallies over the years, bringing back loads of bits and pieces for the Radio Hobby, he taught me the MorseCode and helped many of us to get the licence. I tried hard but could never match his speed on Morse (CW).
A wonderful man and I am proud to have been his friend, R.I.P Jim.

Jim had a love of amateur radio and Morse code, building his first radio as a boy. He once made contact with the QEII. When told the ships co-ordinates dad said “you are very close to where the titanic sank” the radio operator replied “you certainly know your coordinates Jim” soon after a card arrived from the QE11. He acquired a love of film from his mother who played piano to silent films, he saw every western and war film recalling scenes and lines. He had a lifelong career as a TV engineer seeing his first TV in 1949. He enjoyed everything electronic and electrical. People respected his knowledge and advice. As a boy he enjoyed summers on a beach arriving in the family car called “the wagon”. He visited aunt Judy’s farm in Oldcastle from a young age and rode the pony across the hills. He had a sharp memory for people, places, conversations and a talent for quotes that described a situation. He always thought things happen for a reason. His knowledge of family history was exceptional. In 1962 he arrived in Carlow to visit cousin Dottie and met Mary. Following an instant attraction and marriage, I arrived. Dad loved driving and “letting the throttle out”. He wanted to train as a pilot, we know he had the ability. He often sat in the cockpit beside his friend Richie, a pilot, who would fly over our home and mother would run to the garden to wave. I will miss him dreadfully. Dad you are now flying high and are transmitting from a new frequency. Silent Key EI8GD. Over and Out.
