Ramelton has lost a legend. We loved our nights in the wine bar. Such great memories of James showing us all the photos and hearing the stories behind them. Sympathies to his family, friends and all who loved him.
Thanks James for all the wonderful evenings. Always to be remembered. Rest in Peace.🌹
James my old friend. What a man you were. I first remember properly meeting you on a sunny day at Granny’s (Mrs Metcalfe) house in the mid 90’s, you were with Shelagh. You were wearing a sleeveless denim jacket with no shirt and I thought you were a rock star. I asked you if you were going in swimming, it being a hot day. I’ll always remember your wry answer, “Nah, you wouldn’t want to do that, you’d probably catch a chill”. It was the way you told them, the way you could deliver a line that was one part of your multifaceted charm.
Your intelligence was unparalleled, your knowledge of music encyclopedic, your ability to mix with literally anyone from any walk of life and, as your brother Hubert so eloquently said at your funeral, “to make that person feel good” - so many things about you were unique. Not least your absolutely hilarious sense of humor. I have never laughed as hard as in your company, James. There would be times when my sides would ache from laughter. I’ll always remember one night us coming back to the wine bar very late together, when a tractor came hurtling down by the lower road, lights blazing at around 2 am. I can’t recall exactly what you said but it was so funny we spent several minutes laughing.
When we’d meet up, you’d always say “Happy days” and they were - we all looked forward to meeting up with you again. You were the highlight of any trip back to Donegal. So thank you James for everything. May God bless you James. Rest in peace sir.
