I met James and Ciara at the Equine Affaire in Massachusetts several years ago. We were instantly cronies and we chatted several times over the next few days. I never got to Galway. Covid happened and changed so many things. I'm sorry I never got to see James again. I'm so sorry that Ciara, his family and the horse world have lost this lovely person.

I never met James but loved his videos about Bud & Buddy & especially when he was in Galway. We’d chatted online a few times about horses & hunting in Ireland,& since he wasn’t too far from me in Virginia I was hoping to meet in person.

Sad to hear of the passing of a great horseman who helped me on my journey back into horse ownership
Professor Tonery taught my daughter in the States, and she was absolutely devastated to hear of his passing. Devastated. He would inspire her daily and she looked forward to connecting with him and the horse world when she graduated. With the utmost deepest sympathy and may eternal light shine upon.
It’s very hard to put into words the impact James had. He was kind in his messages, made many friends and his love for horses shone through. So sad we never got to meet in person.
To the entire Tonery family, to all those close to him & to his many friends, please accept my sincere condolences at the passing of James.
As we all know, James led such a big life and he loved his family, close friends & his horses! He had so many stories to keep us laughing, engaged and learning.

My condolences to the Tonery family on Jimmy’s passing. I will always have fond memories of playing with him and against Jimmy on the Gaelic football field. His large frame, using his Rubgy skills on the Gaelic field and true sense of humour on and off the field made him a joy to know. RIP Jimmy

James Tonery was my riding professor at Johnson and Wales my freshman year and he was an absolutely amazing guy. He was my favorite professor always cracking jokes and making me love riding even more. He truly made my time at college worth it. James always pushed me to be my best and challenge me in the best way.

My family visited Ireland for the first time in 2018. We were greeted by James and Willie and got a first class tour of Galway and the surrounding country. Fox hunting abroad was a life-long dream of my moms and getting to do that with James was the best experience imaginable. His knowledge and care for his horses was admirable. The meals and drinks the rest of the visit made us fast friends. We are so fortunate to have made a lasting friend of James. Meeting his family and getting to host him ourselves was also a treat. I don’t think anyone got as much joy from riding and watching other top horses perform as James did. I will hold on to these memories forever.
I am so sorry to hear of James’ passing. I never met him, but i thoroughly enjoyed his facebook posts. I started following him when a horse named Comanche came under his care, followed by the closure of his barn during covid, his move to the US, and then back to Ireland again. His zest for life and love for horses really shined bright. That he took the time to give us all a helmet’s eye view of his many fox-chases accentuated with his unabashed laughter really showed how much he loved life. He was such a positive, gregarious spirit who I admired. Sending my deepest sympathies to all his loved ones. Rest in peace, James.
My deepest sympathies for all James' family. I sadly never did get to meet him. Quite a few years ago now, James responded so very kindly when I was at a low point in life. He invited me to come and stay and to enjoy being around horses again. I have never forgotten his genuine kindness and am so very sad to hear of his passing. From north Bucks, England.
Shocked and saddened to hear of James passing. Our sincerest condolences to all his family and friends. He will be missed

I only met James once- when we took a riding excursion from Cooper’s Hill on holiday in 2017. However, James was so nice and genuinely cared about the horses - the whole experience inspired me to start riding again more regularly after decades away from it- bringing me a forgotten joy. I credit James for some piece of this joy. I followed his adventures on FBook after that day- he will surely be missed by many- but I hope he is hanging with his favorite horses up there!
James you were a great friend to me and I was so lucky to know you. I won’t forget the conversations on the porch or by the fire place, the trip to Virginia on Cindy’s farm, the swimming in the storm, and the daily winter swims. You have given me so many life lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Rest easy James
Got to know James through tourism in the last few years. I am in shock as he was larger than life and a great character. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. RIP James.
