I was blessed to have known Jean from my time in UCD. It was always a pleasure to be in her company. She bore her illness with remarkable strength and dignity. Ger, your love and devotion to Jean was truly inspirational. It was clear that you both adored each other. She often said how lucky she was to have a mum like you. Farewell to an amazing friend in every sense of the word. I will always fondly remember our time together.

I will greatly miss my friendship with Jean that spanned 20 years from when we first met learning to cook at Tante Marie. She was such a kind, thoughtful and bright person with a truly original mind. Her book recommendations were always amazing! It was always a real treat to see her on my visits to Ireland too. I am sure her death will leave a huge hole in so many lives and I'm thinking of you as you come to terms with your terrible loss.

My deepest condolences about the loss of Jean. 

Jean was my friend and one of the best. Her thoughtfulness, kindness, humour and in particular grace and strength was unparalleled. She was certainly my source of strength during some trying times.

Jean's intelligence, knowledge and insightfulness was at times frightening. When you engaged Jean on a topic you did your homework and came prepared! All this and how she cared about and applied her mind to certain issues made her a wonderful friend and a fun dinner companion.

Some of my fondest memories with Jean were as her guest at Jenny Tully's beautiful wedding day. Jenny, her husband and the Tully's family's warm welcome to me  on the day is a testament to the friendships that Jean held. I recall it taking us about an hour to leave that evening as we were having so much fun!

We are heartbroken.

I went to loreto with Jean and have such fond memories of good conversation with her on the school bus and in more recent times in sharing our ideas on literature wiht an occasional email. It’s been my privilege to be Jean’s friend since childhood. I’ve such lovely memories of us playing with Smokey, wearing our Boyzone T-shirts with pride and her neat handwritten notes.

I’ll really miss Jean’s warm tight hugs and her beautiful face. She was so thoughtful, kind, witty and intelligent. She excelled at anything she put her mind to and fought her illness with such bravery and dignity.

Jean will always have a piece of my heart and I’ll miss her dearly. I’m so, so sorry for your huge loss Ger and Tom. You were such wonderful, devoted parents and Jean was so lucky to have you both.
