The eulogy of George FitzGerald will be made on another day. That is a promise.

For now, for today, on your behalf, I want to say just this:
George FitzGerald was a man of integrity, dedication, loyalty, honesty, and wisdom.
An example of a son, a brother, a husband, an uncle, a father-in-law, a grandad, a great-grandad, a friend.
And an example as a Dad. Our Dad.

Dad had many gifts but his greatest gift was his ability to love.
Dad cared. Dad cared and he acted on that.
To help. To counsel. To house. To feed. To clothe. To aid. To support. To love.
To love, and show love over and over again. Dad never stopped loving every one of us.
For the 85 years we were lucky to have him.

Dad you will be loved in return, forever by all of us. And by many more.
You will be missed forever.
Thank you.

Thank you everyone for your kind words about George. They mean so much to all of us. Due to the unusual circumstances, the service had to be a private one. Many of you have said that you wish you could have been present. We wish so too, more than you can imagine. The words below, spoken by his family at his funeral mass, may be of comfort to you.

Though we are apart, right now our hearts are as one – together in grief at Dad’s passing.
Together in the indestructible love we have for George. For Dad.
There are so many, many people who would have wished - and expected - to be here.
To honour and say goodbye to George. To pay last respects.
Because, Dad was an extraordinary man.

But these are extraordinary times.

A global pandemic was what it took to keep us from holding the service Dad deserved today.
Only a pandemic could keep us from hugging and consoling each other, the way we ache to.
Only a pandemic could keep so many people from celebrating Dad’s extraordinary life here this morning.
That celebration.
Those hugs.
They are not cancelled.
They are merely paused.
They are on hold.

We will all gather again in greater number in the future.
That is a promise Dad.
