Jim (James) Kirwan

Dear Mary, Rita, Clare and all the family.
I am so upset, only heard today of Jim's sad passing, wonderful husband, father ,grandad and friend, nature's gentleman and a great character.
My sympathies and condolences to you all at this tragic time, and I deeply regret not being at the funeral.
I'll light candles and say a prayer in Clarendon St today, and, I hope I will see you soon.
God rest Jim's gentle soul.

Where would I start to honour Mr Kirwan? The most well known & beloved 'trooper' of Sandymount Road, only second in mileage & weather endurance to his lovely wife Mary! As devout to the church at the top of the road, his domain extended to the bottom of the road too with H Williams/Tesco, McAuliffes & McCormacks greengrocers as regular stops to say hello/entertain all in his path. 'Hilarious' doesn't do him justice!

Anytime a pillar of the Sandymount community passes, we are reminded just how lucky we were. Mr Kirwan was a great family man. From rides on the 52 bus (sitting in the windshield) to the special offers on bikes/ hoovers parts (c'mere and I'll show you a great bike I re-assembled), his company, conversation & funniness were compelling.
He had a most kind & generous heart. Even in my adult years, if I ran into Mr. Kirwan, he would say 'heres something for you' & offer a miraculous medal or a prayer pamplet, always with a nice story he remembered about my own beloved Mother, Maureen. He had an encyclopedic memory that he never lost.

He was King of his Castle at no. 26. Even when less agile, orders were given for guests to receive star treatment, & anything he received was shared. I always loved dropping; that amazing memory, you'd get away with nothing!

Mr Kirwan will be sorely missed by Mary & the whole family but his spirit will live forever in the hearts of all those who had the pleasure to know him.
RIP, Mr Kirwan, Sandymount has lost its finest.
